Pacific Grove Concours / Rally 8.18.06

Last Friday was the Pacific Grove CA Concours and Rally. The event draws about 300 cars of all varieties, and is held on the Monterey Peninsula. At about 6pm the cars travel 17 Mile Drive, through downtown Monterey and Pebble Beach Golf Club - cheered by small and large groups of people. The weekend is that of the Historic Auto Races, Concorso Italiano, The Quail, and the Pebble Beach Concours - so the Peninsula is loaded with car buffs.

Chuck Latty and his Red Beck Spyder
Gene from Arizona and his pretty black/tan 'trailered-in' Spyder
and my Silver Blue Beck, which managed to be awarded a "Judges Choice" blue ribbon and a bottle of wine at the awards bbq afterwards.

It's on again this year - and we expect more Spyders!
Friday 8/17 - close-in hotels are likely gone but maybe something like Watsonville might still have space 1/2 hour or so away.

We're expecting Ralph C, Hotrod Harry, Goofycat (with new Spyder?), and me - plus??? - last year we had Chuck Latty and Gene from Arizona for a total of 3 Spyders - we'll shoot for 5 or 6 this year...great fun - low key Concours, fun rally around 17 mile drive/pebble beach area with crowds, police escort, and nice informal banquet/bbq afterwards....

I would love to take one of my cars but I have media passes to the historics and am going to cover the Historic Ferrari races that afternoon.

Lots of attention overall - particular interest in the Subaru installation.... 4 of us were able to 'run' together during the rally around 17 mile drive/Pebble Beach/downtown Carmel - creating a rare sight.....

***- PLAN on it for NEXT year - If you didn't go this year - Friday August 15, 2008*** / plan on making hotel reservations before May 08!!! (it's the Pebble Beach / Historic Races / Quail / Auction / weekend - so everything gets booked early - some hotels require 3 nights min and triple their normal rates.........booking early for 'just' Friday night may allow a $140 range room for a single night in Pacific Grove or nearby....

The limit to the number of cars is 300 or so - and usually it doesn't book up (if at all) until later in the year....HOWEVER....getting a hotel room for that weekend is another challenge. It's a hoot with the afternoon very informal Concours and evening Rally around the Monterey Peninsula/17 Mile Drive/and Pebble Beach.....optional bbq follows.

Barry/aka Goofycat booked at the Salinas Marriott a while back but it's up to nearly $300 for a single night's stay now - and 24 miles from the event. I've got a room booked at the Salinas Quality Inn (~$150) - and will watch for something reasonably priced, of decent quality, that's a bit closer....for that single night Friday stay (8/15 checkout 8/16/08)

this is the weekend of the Pebble Beach Concours, Monterey Historic Races, Concorso Italiano, and the "Quail" - the Monterey Peninsula hotels are heavily booked and many require a 3 night minimum....book some room now if you even think you might want to participate.

Reminder - the event requires registration (contact the site http://www.pgautorally.org for the reg. form) - and unless you've got lodging already - probably a hotel for at least Friday night....no small trick - hotels are pricey that weekend and often demand 2-3 nite minimum - It would be great to have a good sized Spyder contingent there!!!

Anyone attending with their Spyder who'd like to park together (which also means we'll run together in the Rally) let me know rjiloty ' at ' gmail.com and I'll send you our 1pm meeting spot - we plan to meet about a mile from the registration area and drive over togehter at ~ 1:10.
