Well, this is my first time posting to this thread and I never said this up above, but yes, the Targa (any year) was never my favorite, either.  Can't put my finger on it, but they lacked that little something that made them look classy.  I think it was that ridiculous, flat, Rollbarwing-thing.  Just never did it for me.

And the late 80's versions had finally gotten away from the 1970's "Earth Tone" color combos that made them.........I Dunno........Yucky.

Skip the Targa, Gerd, and go for the Cab.

I'd agree that there are plenty of options out there and you may find a better deal as you go along if you can expand your search from coast to coast. The Carreras in Colorado are right around that price as well so you may need to look in SD, TX, AZ. Another thought is that I do believe the price spike recently is justified. With the Turbos becoming astronomical, 993s high, 964s going up, there is now a new market shift for the Carreras/SCs. Personally, I like the Targas because they maintain more of a body line than the Cabs do and they made far fewer of them. The water cooled cars are just not the same but you are in that price range...for a reason.

Am I the only one in the entire universe, that detests those huge whale tails?

Even if they were race proven, "rear end anchors", to reduce drift. I don't race. And I want my car too looook goood!

Every  and I mean every time I see an ad with this floppy pieces of bologna, I ask myself, what will this cost to remove????

Pluses: 3.6 engine, it's a Carrera 2 so rear wheel drive not 4, and there is a reason the 964 is the car Singer uses to make his creations.

Gerd, happy to help you spend your money!

Be careful on those 99 to 2009 996s. They still have the IMS bearing issue.  Motor is ticking time bomb and resale is terrible because its water cooled and everyone see,s to want the older aircooled.  The 964, 993 are really going up in price because they are air cooled...bulleproof.  Anything 88 to 98 would be a great time.  Cab first, then coupe, then targa IMO

I was under the impression you were a coupe person ??  Gerd, I will move a Porsche  out of the way to drive my JPS Coupe.

BUT....the Base Caymans are terrific drivers and don't require much maint or repair.

Think about a 993 (1995-1998) the last air cooled Porsche, you can still buy them in the 40K range and they are appreciating in value.

Of course you have to say your prayers every night that you won't have to repair anything...like a IMS.

No IMS in the 993...didnt start until 99 with the 996.

That is right.  My bad, the IMS failure is primarily on the water cooled engines, I was thinking about the Cayman.

The 993 has the normal sealing problems, multi link suspension concerns and a valve carbon problem.  In any case any repair on a Porsche is expensive and something to consider.

As for tails, they both have bubble butts that are very attractive IMHO.

Back when I was working and especially from 1990-2001, it seemed like a lot of folks I worked with were buying new Porsches (company stock was doing well at the time).  Both air-cooled and water-cooled, although no one I knew bought a Cayman.

I was kind-of surprised  at how often they seemed to be in the shop - all under warranty, for sure, but a couple of the owners told me the only way they would have one was if it was under warranty ::: The repair costs for an out-of-warranty Porsche were mind blowing.  I was also surprised that a couple of the cars (who really had non-aggressive owner/drivers) seemed to get about 20,000 miles from a set of tires.  THAT was a surprise!

Owned a 2001 Boxster S.  Everything went wrong as soon as it came off warranty.  Very expensive to maintain.  I was an aggressive driver and went through 4 tires in about 15,000 miles.  When my 2 sons got their drivers licenses (of course I had to have the kids listed as drivers) my insurance went through the roof.  When I got rid of the Boxster and got a BMW M Coupe my overall insurance went down $1500/year.  I will say however that the Boxster was the best handling car I have ever owned and while it would not beat the BMW in a straight line it would drive circles around it on a track.

I agree on the boxster.  I had two.  One I had with 19000 miles and it was an 03.  Sold it in feb.  had the ims done as preventative but did a whole lot of other crap...age related.  1st one was an 02 with 37000 miles and never did anything to it. But 993...whole different ball game. Just look at those hips! Even my 951s is a trip, but the boxster handling is really one of the best...

Todd, that is my dream car.  To me, the quintessential Porsche 911, the right model in the right year(s) in the right color.

I had a black 97 C2 6 speed that I sold (at a nice profit) and hope to replace with a silver one...no turbos, no all wheel drive, no wings, no auto...the basic classic 911.

Other than the Cayman and the Boxster, I think they have lost their way, what next ?  A pickup truck. ?

Buy one of those Gerd !!!
