Having rubbed my new (to me) speedster all over it finally dawned on me that there are many tiny nicks and pits in the paint. I assume (damn I hate that word) that this is normal from road wear. I can see the white primer/fiberglass coming through. I read with interest the post on clear coating. Can I get a new paint job over the old and then go for the multi coats of clear coat. I would appreciate your vast expertise. Or even your half vast expertise since I have none.

Well the finish sure looks good in your pictures! Yes you can paint over the existing finish. It just has to be sanded (for adhesion), perhaps sealed, and primed. A good paint job can easily cost between $2-3k though. The big cost is in prep. Its always best to remove anything that is removeable too. Stress cracks can not simply be filled - they must be ground out and often the area reinforced.
