I'm still a few months away from painting the spyder, but I think I've narrowed it down to two colors: white or light gray. I'm thinking the gray that was used on the 911 Sport Classic that came out in 2010. Interior has blue leather seats/dary gray carpet. I like Danny P's white car, but thought the gray would be interesting. Anyone have pics of a spyder or speedster in light gray.

Hey Jeff, The dog.....is he purebred berner...I mean Bernese Mountain Dog?

I'm asking because I love 'em. My boy Henry died in March '94 and I've kept from having another dog because I didn't think I'd ever be able to get so hooked in with anything but another berner, but now I'm first pick of a solid litter due in September and I'm getting all excited at the prospect of another great dog.

Oh, and I think the gray would look fine as long as it's not metallic paint, but I'd want a few shades darker I think.
Sorry Jeff -- looks like primer to me.

You are on the wrong site. Go to spyderclub.com You'll get a little more spyder-specific input there. Don't go crazy on a paint scheme, you'll wreck your resale. The spyder market leans heavy towards authentic and wouldn't be big on something like purple with white interior.

Right now, white is the hot color. I think it was Danny P. that I'm quoting when saying white is the new silver. Along with Danny's, one of the best looking 550 belongs to "gotowo" in Australia. He cloned the color scheme off of 550-0017. White with blue darts and blue wheels = sharp! Google "550 gotowo" or "550-0017" and see if you can come up with some images.
Mark - spyder or speedster, this is still the best site. Much more active than the spyder club site.

The gray is very close to dolphin gray from the 356 cars. Which, I guess does look like primer. Nice primer, but still primer. I'm planning on painting it myself, so if it's really ugly gray, I can always change the color. Planning on blue darts to match the interior. Of course all this could change over the summer & just paint it white with blue darts.

"Bronx" (the big black & white dog) was a Newfie. Lost him & his sister last winter & spring. Great dog. He spent many hours "helping" me in the garage working on past speedsters & other cars.

Kieth-

They're silver because that's the right color for them. You don't see a rainbow of other colors, because silver was the color of German race-cars in the '50s.

... anyhow, it's not like you're likely to run into somebody else with a spyder/speedster of any color tooling around on a sunny day.

The Janis Joplin 356 had a unique paint scheme.

You first.
First of all, thanks to those who like my color combo. I didn't know if I was going to like it at all, but it turned out well. I even took apart my Maisto 550 model and painted it first!

I painted mine white for a few reasons. One, I think silver is NOT very visible. White happens to be better in that respect, and the red darts REALLY draw your eyes to the brake lights.

White is the correct color for an American-owned sportscar racing in Europe in the 50s. There was a white w/blue dart Spyder that raced LeMans in '56. Also, there was a silver Spyder that ran the Targa Florio, the race organizers made them brush-paint it white so it could be differentiated fom the Mercedes cars. Maglioli won that race outright!

The reason I went with red darts was to match the interior, which in my car was red leather.

The last reason is that just about ALL Spyders are silver, so wanted to be different at the shows.......but still use a color that had a bit of originality/history to it.

Subaru Glacier white 0230(1998), darts are Nissan AX6 red(2005). No metalflakes, just color.

Jeff, have fun with your selection!
If white was the new silver, then primer is the new white. Primer over a primer interior, with primered seats. You would have to use different, yet complimentary shades of primer, but it's okay to do that.

Back in the 50s, naturally, there was only one 'correct' shade of primer, but purists will cut you some slack if you've got grey seatbelts and knobs.

Jeff,

Sorry to hear of your loss of both of your dogs, and so close together.
Looking again, of course he was a Newfy - it's his eyes. The white blaze got me as some of that is part of the BMD standard and I guess I've been on one track since I began thinking of taking in another Berner. So, my mistake.

Here's where I'm coming from about dogs: http://www.thebernese.com/
I like that 911 gray you've picked out. When we were going to paint our spyder every said it HAD to be silver that black would look TERRIBLE...

We bought a scale model spyder in black. Looked at it for a long time and decided that black would be just fine. Danny did a similar thing before he painted his white.

Feeling dicy about it? Buy a model and knock yourself out. Personally, I think this is a spectacular choice. You've chosen a subdued but elegant color that is definately a "porsche" choice.
