Got an old CMC pan based with the fiberglass shell seats....neither my wife or I can squeeze comfortably in them. Seen Miata seats installed (barely) that is one option but there are many reclinable racing type seats available on line. Has anybody had sucess with one wide enough for a 200 lb/er installed in a pan based Speedster

Agree the slotted speedster buckets don't fit butts with above 36" waist. Seems many of the racing seats have wide obtrusive shoulder areas which won't fit even if seat bottom is 20". Porsche 914 seats don't have reclining backs but they can be made to tilt 4 inches or so. Search for thread on Gordon's burgundy leather Corinthian leather seats.
Yeah, the market availability is pretty limited.
The max seat width that will fit into the seat well is 16" and that's it.
I had a pair of 17-3/4" wide seats which I narrowed down to 16" and even then they are a tight fit.
Personally, I would either go with Porsche 914 or Mazda Miata (MX-5) seats - they both should fit.
Gary - My car was built by Vintage Speedsters (see Makers tab above). I asked Kirk (owner) for wider, more comfortable seats. He installed these (pics). I am 220# and find these are very comfortable (daily driver long & short distances). Give them a call and see if what they have suits your needs.

MUSBJIM is also known to wear Duluth Trading Company "Long Haul" jeans......So he can "crouch without the Ouch" when getting in or out of his Speedster:
Heeeeeyyy, I love my Duluth Long Haul (or is is Big Haul) jeans!
Nope, "Ballroom" jeans they are. Clever.
Those Duluth trading TV ads always crack me up!
Love those interior colors Jim - the leather color is exactly what I like.
I have seats like that that I am going to re-cover - do the raised edges
along the sides catch your hips?
Not sure but a stock style Cobra seat may fit a Speedster
This the type I have in the 289 FIA, they are comfortable even for me with my 200+lbs but if you are carving the curves I tend to slide around in the seat and that is why I used a Cobra racing seat with higher thigh, hip and shoulder bolsters when doing track time, kept me in position when the harness was tightened down.

These look comfortable...Who makes them or better yet...Where can I get a pair?...and everybody is correct about the "breathing" room in a good pair of Duluths...it gets hot out here in San Diego.........also on Miata seats...will aftermarket Miata racing seats fit in a pan based money pit?

Gary, the Cobra seats I have were purchased from Cobra Seats USA more than 15 years ago, cost about $325-350ea back then. Full grain leather on a tubular frame and included adjustable slide mounts. Not cheap but well worth the expense in my humble opinion.
If they need to be narrower on the bottom than 16 inches, these might not fit. Here is the measurement chart from Cobra Seats.
Those do look nice though.
Here's 914 seat. There is tilt control as well as back and forth. They are stock with high back but look more period with back cut off.

The Roadster SS seat I'm sure would work because they fit a whole lot of narrow vehicles including kit cars. With that being said I've taken a ride in them in a Buick V-6 powered, modified '59 MGA owned by a guy I know and though they are more comfortable than the stock Speedster seat and not near as 'stylish' as the Cobra Classic, IMO, they are tight fit for a big butt
Whereas the Cobra Classic is much more comfortable and better looking.
I'll be bringing the 289 back to the house soon and when I do I may pull one of the Cobra seats and one of the Speedster seats and see if the Cobra seats fit the Speedster physically. My Cobra drivers seat has a 'quick release' fitting allowing it to be removed quickly so the racing seat can be installed thus making it only having to remove the 4 seat bolts on the Speedster.
