I think my rear brackets were empi... but the calipers were a direct bolt on from a MkIV jetta, just saying.
Alan: as I mentioned, in MD there are two "vintage" car registration categories: Historic and Street Rod. Historic means essentially original, possibly restored as such. Street Rod means "substantially modified" , which my '71 VW Beetle certainly is. So that's what I have. In the latter case, no inspection is required. Do not ask me what the thinking is here, but that is the deal here in MD. I'm not asking any questions. Registration in MD with the original CA title and plates that came with the car, was a breeze -- just send money.
As to my very likely Empi rear disk eqt, it is fitted with an e-brake mechanical piston. I just need to be able to rig up a system that pulls on the cable. I have a plan . . .
I've seen old VW shifters that were bent to look like a 356. Many years ago my original short shifter from VS broke at the base. I ordered an old 1957 unit that had been reconditioned from someone in The Samba. It works fine for me but then again, I am used to the shitty OEM VW units. The Vintage Speed unit is the best and closest looking unit to an old 356 unit. I know they do custom work; they could very easily make that shifter look like the old 356 unit but it'll definitely cost more.

Regarding the need for an E Brake. I bought my first new car from Niello in Sacramento in 1967. I was a Junior in HS and played in successful Rock Band. We mad enough money on a gig for me to buy a new and improved VW. As you all know that is the highly prized year that VW made the most changes ever in a single years. Notable was the two stage brake brake system that would prevent brake failure. I do not recall anyone having ever suffered through a brake failure since. FYI that was the only year of opening rear windows.
