I have spent a fair amount of time trying to build a suitable parking brake to replace the conventional VW brake. I have an original umbrella handle 356 that I intended to fit, but it requires a large bellcrank that is not easily fit into the VW chassis. I know others have done it successfully, I just have not found a solution to the problems it would generate in my car....yet.
I did cut the vw brake out before having the frame powdercoated but recently I have riveted it back in so as to get a safety inspection completed...then I will go back to it....

If "the Look" is the reason you are moving the brake from between the seats you could always install an inline brake lockout. I have one between my seats. hardly noticeable. Step on the brake pedal and push down, the rear brakes are locked. Step on it again, pull up... rear brakes are unlocked. Works as a parking brake just fine. I miss being able to use a hand brake while driving. But you wouldnt be able to use the 'umbrella' under the dash for that anyway.
Its a simple solution when trying to get rid of the hand brake for aesthetic reasons.

fyi - the hydro lock is not a safe emergency brake and will not pass most safety inspections. plus they can seize on.

George, I've seen Jim's work on the reproduction/resto-mod-looking handbrake he's mentioned.
It's pretty similar in form to mine, and it looks to be a great deal more durable. It would be a very nice substitute for the VeeDub-handled brake, and looks very 'period-correct,' if that's what you're after.

Yep, line lock brakes are a no-no in PA.

From pictures I have seen of the real ones Lakar has one. But i beleive the 1950 thru 1955 Ford parking brake would be a close substitute .It looks a lot like the 356 unit. I have wondered if it'sthe same part.

Nope! not the one. The old Ford was a chrome Tee handle deal that you pulled out to lock and twist to release.
