I will be leaving the Sacramento area around 2pm Thursday. Heading for dinner with Bruce in Medford Thurs night and meeting Eddie Janis in Redding on the way. Anyone want to drive up together. Ive heard this event is a great time. Replica friendly, not real stuffy, and excellent BBQ sat evening. Plus, Gary Emory opens up all his parts areas for walk thrus
Dale and I, Steve and Angela Lane and hopefully Eddie Janis plan on leaving Medford on Friday morning for McMinnville. The first 1/3 of the trip will be on perfect Speedster/Spyder two lanes. Guaranteed to be stirring that gearshift many times each mile. The last 1/3 will also be on rolling two lane thru orchard and vineyard territory.

I'll be bringing along some Replica Rendezvous hats and T shirts for those of you that missed getting these soon to be collectable momento's from the first ever Speedster/Spyder meet at Knotts in April. It will be the appropriate dress on Saturday and Sunday at Parts Obsolete!

If you can join us Friday morning for the caravan, give me an e mail,
tutw@aol.com.

Bruce

Bruce, thanks for the email. I won't be driving up with Dale to the Campout, just meeting him in Redding to say hi. That weekend I'm planning on driving down to Sacramento to meet with Brian Bell and go to the Councours that is honoring the Speedster's 50th. Many of the same cars that will be at Pebble Beach in June will be there, I'm told. We'll see. Anyway I hope you guy's have a good time at Emory's. Eddie
Scott,

You know we'll be looking for you after your offer. Don't know what time we'll be there but I am assuming mid afternoon or so. May go up and check into he hotel first and then see if I remember how to locate the Parts Obsdolete grounds. If I remember last year that created some interesting opportunities. Almost thought I was headed into a nudist colony for awhile but it was just some over enthusastic
celebrants!

Bruce
Eric,

Do you think the Outlaws will mind having their picture taken? After all they may have been on "The Most Wanted" program and might be a little camera shy! Or possibly in the witness protection program and they are mighty shy! LOL.

In any case we'll see what we can do and post some. Looking forward to the show and swap. Not that I need anything but that stuff always needs a new home!

Bruce
Dale B.,
Are you still planning to cruise to the coast for a few hours on Saturday during the show? Looking at the agenda a morning cruise would get us back early afternoon for some R&R and beers as things gear up for the party that night. We're in for the cruise if you're game.
Rick
Rick / Bruce, I am still planning to drive out to the coast on Sat morning. This is supposed to be some of the most beautiful coast line in OR. I plan a leisurly drive to the coast, head north to the Tillimook Cheese region (although everyone knows CA has the happiest cows and the best cheese) and then through the legendary OR wine country. The round trip is about 165 miles and there should be some very pleasent driving roads. Any one is welcome, of course, and we will definitly be back for the all day car show, BS that accompanies it, and the fantastic BBQ. Anyone else from the Bay/Sacramento/Redding area driving up?
Dale,

When you say cheese, say Wisconsin. The Tillimook aged white cheddar is very, very good, but Wisconsin still is the best Cheddar in my experience. And then the only Limburger cheese factory left in the USA is just north of Monroe, WI. Talk about heaven!!

But in any case, would be fun to get a nice group to ride and taste our way thru Northern Oregon!

See ya next Thursday and Saturday we'll cut the cheese!

Bruce
I'm sorry I mentioned it to you guys! I believe the term referred to Canuks driving across the border for (in prior years) cheap gas and cheap dairy products. Let's get back to the wine and drop the cheesey stuff eh!?
Dale, how come more speedster guys aren't coming the Bay/Sacto area. I drove from Watsonville to Salem in 10 hours coming home from Knotts so it can't be much more than 7 hours from your area, right? Just a decent day's drive in a Speedster.
Rick
Rick, Id have to guess on the lack of attendance from the bay area guys. Perhaps...
10) lots of graduations on or around that weekend,
09) prime golf time, lots of other events close to home,
08) some may work for "the man" and could not get vacation,
07) 18 hour round trip (driveing time),
06)wife or other said "NO",
05)the roads in OR are too pretty and you cant hit the apex and see the scenics at the same time,
04) other events such as the Shriners Concours (porsche speedster featured car)
03) some folks did not want to camp and they don't realize there is a nice hotel within 3 miles
02) it is too hot to drive through Redding with the top down,
and the number 1 reason that more are not drivintg to the Parts Obsolete Campout is....
01) There will be too many ORIGNIAL PORSCHES and we only have "kit cars" and they dont want to deal with the SNOBS, sniff.

Actually, if there is a non-snobby group, this is the place/event. A great time to get out and represent.
Scott, Dale, and Rick,

I looked at the long range weather yesterday also and it does look good, some possible showers early in the week but that is good, have time to get them out of McMinnville.

I was at Parts Obsolete last year on Sunday and everyone seemed really mellow about what you were driving, think the moss backed Washington and Oregonians welcoming the summer sun helped a lot.

Scott, you up to joining us on the cruise to Tillamook on Saturday morning? Should be fun. Got a fresh oil and filter change and carbs dialed in on the new engine so ready to rock and roll. Won't be pushing the new engine hard so you guys have mercy on me!

Bruce
Dale,
I totally understand your top 10, just figured with the numbers in your area that a couple of guys might have travelled with you for what has to be a neat event from all reports I've heard. I'm not worried about top reason on your list (which is very creative by the way), but the #2 reason is very true! Us lucky northerners just have to duke it out with Seattle and Portland traffic. Not sure which situation is worse. I think I'd take the heat, but.....
See you in seven days
Rick
OK Guys,

Parts Obsolete is this weeknd and I'm sure a good time will be had by all. The long range forecast looks great for the weekend, sunny and in the 70's, real top down weather.

Dale Bates has come up with a nice tour on Saturday morning over to the coast and Tillamook for some coast cruising and general fooling around, maybe some winery visits included. A group of us Replicar guys and Gals are leaving Medford on Friday morning to wend our way up to McMinnville. Plan on taking the "scenic" route most of the way so if you are in N. California or Southern Oregon and planning on making the Parts Obsolete weekend give me an e mail and I'll shoot back the details, Bruce Williams tutw@aol.com

Thanks in advance to whomever for taking photos at the campout of the Outlaws that will be in attendance. Parts Obsolete used to have many photos at their web site but they have been removed.

I am especially interested in photos of some of the personalized features, especially the interiors. This is an event I would love to attend.
Erik, if I can sneak away with the office camera I'll get some photos for you. PO's web site has been down for so long that I'm sure they have some new cars to look at by now that weren't available before. The weather might be marginal for the trip north on Friday guys, but is looking more favorable for the weekend. We just won't know until then.
Erik and Scott,

I'm bringing my digital also and will try and get some shots, camera is good, guy behind it is still a novice! Scott, the long range from here still looks good, this via the Weather underground web site. The TV weather channel looks a little more edgy on Friday but full steam ahead. We may get a few sprinkles but we can live with those. I am sure Rick Davis and Henry won't drag any down from BC.

Looking forward to the trip and the event, got a cell phone now so nothing bad will happen to me this time!

Bruce
Bruce Dale Scott and all,
Henry and I promise to leave any foul weather behind when we head south, but if the weather is fabulous like today, we'll drag it along.
Seriously looking forward to this weekend with all of you, especially the wine/cheese cruise on Saturday. We're sporting a slightly different look to the car since Knotts.
See you sometime early Friday afternoon.
Rick
Hey all!

Great news from Parts Obsolete. One of our own won first place in the open class, thats right, a replicar owned by Scott Sloan from Portland won with his year old IM that is a semi outlaw looking drop dead gorgeous rig. Henry was there when they announced it and there was a momentary period when every one was at a loss for words, we then congratulated Scott and Henry. Wow, a replicar took home the first place bacon in the open class. I think Scott was a little sheepish about it but we all thought it was a special moment for us replicar guys. I didn't hear any of the old guard Porsche guys grumbling so maybe we are on the way to being accepted. Everyone I talked to from the Porsche people couldn't have been nicer to us, lots of questions about our cars. Dale and Michelle Bates, Rick and Brenda Davis, Henry, Scott Sloan and his wife and myself were present from Soc. I've got pictures to put up and Rick does also, he took some of Scotts car so we'll post them in the next day or two. Scott, you'll have to post the color your car is and maybe some more info on it. It is a great looking car.

Bruce
What a great event. 1500 plus miles to get the worst hay fever I can remember having and see an IM chosen as First in the open car class by (Porsche) people's choice! A very nice day for replica's.

There were probably 150 cars of various Porsche, VW and replica types. All on the "evil" grass (I am still sneezing). There was a fun wine/driving tour that Rick Davis, Brenda Davis, Bruce Williams, my wife Michele and I went on. We got there a little late and the large group had already left so we played catch up. Some of the most beautiful driving and scenic roads we have been on. Lots of great people, lots of great cars and a whole bunch of fun. If you can make it next year, do it!

We also took a tour of the avaiton museum in Mcminnville and what a great display of aircraft! The building was built for Howard Hughs "spruce goose" and there are probably 40 aircraft inside sharing the space. That plane is HUGE! the pontoons are as large/larger than most private planes and the wing span is like 110 yards long!

Here are a couple of pics of Scott's winning beaut!! Congratulations and what a pleasure meeting you and your lovely wife, and Leslie the dog!

Dale,

Good job on Scotts car. I had started putting up my photo's but had to stop and do some running. Will put up some more tomorrow when the resident computer whiz is available, My wife! I've got some pics of the outlaw race cars that I think Eric wanted. Hold on Eric till tomorrow! This was a great event for us replicar guys and thanks Scott for bringing your beauty. Let us know that paint color. I know I asked but having a senior moment, I forgot.
Bruce
It was great meeting you three: Dale, Rick and Bruce. I feel like I've known you for years. The Campout was a huge success and a lot of fun. Hope your respective drives home were pleasant. The weather held off perfectly. As everyone has said about Knotts and Carlisle, this gives us something to look forward to for next year. Dale, despite Henry's urgings, I think it will be a North-South run next year. Just give me plenty of notice. We'll swing by and pick up Bruce and give it a go. Oh, and I'm still feeling a little smug about the win. Henry deserves the lion's share of the credit. People (motor heads specifically), regardless of their unfounded replica misgivings, recognize beautiful work and attention to detail.
Back in Canada after a fabulous weekend with all of you. Scott, your award shows that while "steel may be real" but "glass is class"! I figure there were only a half dozen of "us" with glass cars so you know your car was chosen by the "steel guys" cause we couldn't stack the vote with only 6 ballots! Good on ya mate!
The highlight after Scott's award had to be the Wine Cruise. Boy, can Michele Bates ever read directions under "catch-up" pressure!
Brenda and I had a cool trip (temp and drive) home on Sunday and enjoyed the scenery of the Oregon coast.
We can't wait until our next Speedster adventure. How about early Fall down in Bruce's area (Grants Pass maybe) for a weekend of fun and some back road cruising? We could make it a North meets South on a different level. Northwest meets Northern California and it's a reasonable drive for everyone. Any thoughts?
Rick
