Not speedster related but VW none the less...

Got the front end off my v6 Passat and changed the cam belt, water pump, etc. All reference lines on the cam gears and crank line up perfect. Cranked over by hand a few times and reference marks still perfect. Reassemble, fill with coolant, damn leak. Take front end off, fix leak, then reassemble again and fire it up. Sounds like an old deisel...like a coffee can full of nuts and bolts. Shut it down immediately and take front end off for a third time. Everything still lined up perfectly. WTF?

Sure sounds like the expensive time I tightened up the chain on my old Alfa and the tensioner failed and the chain skipped over a few teeth on the cams and then pistons met the valves...but everything is still lined up.

One other guy who did the same said not to worry, just let it run and the noise will stop. Says that turning it over by hand cause the hydraulic lifters to lose oil and that is what I'm hearing. If you let the car run the lifters will fill up again and the noise will stop. I've not been able to confirm this or not...anyone have any experience at all with this sort of thing?

I had 4 Passat wagons, the last one was a 4Motion 2001, all leather, all dressed. Great car! When I traded it in (2003) they gave me $20K as a trade-in with 108K kms on the odometer. Not bad for a car that cost me $36K. Those days are long gone.

Read the write up so it does make sense that there is some noise while the hydraulic bits fill up again. Guess I'll put it back together and give it another go.

But tonight I have the envious task of ripping out and replacing a section of my sewer line and replacing it as the frost heaving, and now melting, put a big crack in it and its leaking like a tap left on. Good clean fun!
