They are very cool engines, but their complexity is off the charts.  Doing a simple tune up is a nightmare for the uninitiated. And not very street friendly either- with the 1500's and 1600's, bottom end/lower midrange is pretty well non-existent.  IIrc, they don't come 'on the cam' (and making power) until 4500 or 5000 rpm.  People used to claim that they were a bear to drive in traffic.  The later 2 liters are a little more driver friendly, but not a whole lot.

As I’ve previously posted, a good friend’s dad had a couple sitting under a bench in his shop BITD. Both pulled out of 356 Carreras in search of drivability. Phil (dad) said it took 8 hours to check/adjust the valves. PITA back in the days when shop time was $25-$30\hr. I can only imagine now that it’s 5+ times that.
