Ok, like a dummy I did not keep the clutch cable tight as I adjusted it (upper gear selection problem that ended up the cable was adjusted to its stop, cable has one of those cable shorteners on it). Now I ned to remove the pedal assembly to reconnect the cable to the pedal.
!. I cannot remove the gas pedal, who ever put it together did not use a removable pin, more like a press fit that will not budge.
2. The pivot pin in the brake pedal does not come out after I remove the clip (this is the pin that has the brake spring attached).

I'm trying to follow the Haynes manual but it seems like my pedals are not the same as outlined in the manual.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Bill, mine mount the same way but without removing the pivot pin on the brake pedal you cannot pull out the pedal assembly. The plunger for the master (brake) cylinder will not clear the foot well wall, seems it must be removed first, but the pin does not come out of the brake pedal assembly and the spring is wrapped tight around the pivot pin. This has been a three night PIA. Simple problem, SOB solution.
There should be a flat clip that holds the plunger rod to the pedal pivot pin. Pull it off, slide the rod off the post and withdraw it from the master cyl. and set it aside. You should then be able to pull the two bolts and remove the whole pedal cluster. In fact you just have to pull the cluster out just far enough to hook the cable back on. This job really goes easier if you have a helper to hold the clutch pedal whilst you are in the rear connecting things up. Ya gotta keep tension on it as you found out lest it unhooks up front. Believe me we're not the only ones that been there..done that!
+At some point, old school VW guys will just weld the clutch pedal and know that then next time around they buy a used pedal assembly. Hey, you can find one for $35 easy, that should be primo. Just buy it and replace it. Not worth an hour's frustration, and you get to clean it up and paint it on the bench.
Bill - Thanks, a big screw driver, a hammer and I'm back in business. I appreciate today's message. Don't have a lot of time to "putz" on the car right now as my brother-in-law (the guy who was with me at Carlisle) and I are prepping the 62 Mini Cooper for this coming weekend's Gold Cup vintage races at Virginia International. It's their 50th anniversary celebration for the track. They have about 300 cars registered for the races and some pretty interesting guests to speak (Carrol Shelby, Sam Posey, Burt Levy, and they claim some suprise guests). Should be one h-ll of a good weekend. I'll definately get pictures of any 356's and post.
