My son-in-law is a Marine with his family in So. Carolina. We are keeping a close watch on them.
As of right now things are ok here in Key West, but we will see what the next few days brings. Thank you for your thoughts and kind words.
New Bern NC., if tack holds we get 50 mph and a lot of rain. The cars are on higher ground, sails are stripped off the boat and the rosesary beads are out.
Prayers for everyone south of us.
We're still dithering a bit on whether to evacuate. We're far enough inland that coastal surge probably won't be an issue, but near enough to a tidal estuary that there is still some concern. Winds here are predicted to be tropical storm force, with some gusts perhaps to hurricane level. Around a foot of rain expected. We have a few hours yet to make up our minds.
Lane,
You might want to go back and read local news reports of Hurricane Hugo. The storm surge from Matthew in the greater Charleston area is supposed to be 2' - 3' HIGHER than Hugo, and Hugo was really bad. The marines have even closed Parris Island and moved the recruits and staff farther inland to safety. That's unprecedented.
Get out now, while you can still get gas and I-26 won't be a parking lot from everyone who waited til the last minute.
Good luck, Lane.....
Go Lane like now...better to be on the safe side
He who hesitates...
