Wife and I were cruising in Grove, Oklahoma yesterday. As we went up a hill in the business district, I felt the accelerator pedal go to the floor and the engine drop to an idle. Idle would not pull the hill so I killed the engine and backed down the hill (in traffic) to the KFC parking lot. People saw I was in trouble and got over for me, but a man and his son pulled into the KFC and asked if we needed help. I told him my cable had come apart and I needed a small wrench and a hex key. He rummaged into the bed of his truck until we found a socket to remove the fitting so I could take it to Oreillys and get the right size hex. He then carried me there and returned me and the tool to the car. I was on my way again in twenty minutes. He tried to give me his ratchet and socket in case I needed it again. Wife tried to buy them something to drink while my head was in the engine bay and I tried to get them to let me buy their dinner, no way he said. What a great example to his son! Thank you Javier and son.

Not so much a instance involving manners but this did happen when I drove my recently completed Gazelle to a KFC a number of years ago. As I got out of the car a good looking woman and her teenaged daughter came out of KFC and she asked me about the car. I explained what it was and that it took me a year to build, to my amazement and her daughter's shock she replied "Oh would you build me one, we could have a lot of fun in a year". Of course those of you that know me, it was back when I had dark hair and was about 35 pounds lighter; CMC was still in business. And no, I didn't build her one but I'll never forget the look on her daughter's face.

Not surprised it was Oklahoma - when I visit relatives in OK it always shocks me to see people wave at you as you pass on the road. Most would give the shirt off their back if you needed it - salt of earth people - Middle America - sometimes I wish I still lived it the fly over country instead of the east coast.
