Dave: What do you mean by "lose the plate?" Does DMV come and take the plate back, put it back into the DMV personalized plate site database or make you pay extra to extend the 30-day time limit? If they rescind your ability to use the plate, do you get your money back? (Dumb question....does the government every give money back...and I'm not talking about tax refunds).
On the post card sent from the DMV I shall quote;" This office is holding your...plates. In order to retian your priiority, Vehicle Code... requires that these plates be assigned to a vehicle. If they are not assigned to a vehicle within 30 days from the date of final notice, we will cancel these plates and make them availble to other applicants." Dirty rats. I thought I could pay a rention fee, as loosely stated on their web site, but I don't think that applies to the orignial issuance. Only if I get rid of the initial car that they were initially registered to...?

Dave,

Go to the DMV, tell them you have not received your car yet, and you need them to extend the period of time they will hold the plate at your local DMV office. My plate come in months before I got my IM, and they held the plate for 90 days for me, after the date they said they would send it back.

Just tell them you still want it and you need them to hold it for a few months until you take delivery of your vehicle.
