The Empi's reproductions are not lightweight forged like the real 914 Fuchs plus the real ones have grey anodized center petals and not black painted.  You can find used Fuchs for about the same price as the new Empi wheels (~$400) - but be sure to get the required (costly) longer lug bolts.

I removed the anodizing and am in process on hand polishing my 2L Fuchs.  Ended up using billet aftermarket caps to clear the rear 36 mm axle bolt and the front speedo drive cable grease cap. Front has 3/8" spacers and rears are tight fit with 185/65x15 tires.

Thanks, and yep familiar with the EMPI offering.

I am debating between:

-Existing 4x130 bug wheels with Moon caps

-Bolting on above 914 repro's

-Switching front discs and rear drums to Porsche Pattern 5x130 for Classic Fuchs

The previous owner had BLACK bug wheels with the moon caps.  Everybody seems to love the look.  It look very 1950's "Hot Rod" to me.  I am on the fence.

PLEASE KEEP PHOTOS COMING IF YOUR CAR HAS FUCHS or 914 BABY FUCHS.

So. Does anyone know if this will or will not work.

1. Swap Front 4x130 Rotor's for 5x130 Rotors

2. Get Rear Drums drilled for 5x130 (Swingaxle)

3. Pick up Fuchs 15x6 (36ET)

4. Put my 185/60-15's on the Fuchs

Vintage Speedster

(edit to add, current steel wheels are 15x4.5 (41ET)

((Looking at this picture [attached], it looks close))

Hello Ronin, did the same swap with the exception of drop spindles in the front which puts the lower ball joint very close to the wheel, so much so that I had to have the wheel balanced so that the weights were placed about an 1.5 in from the inner rim. I also had to shave the rear axle stub and use a 3mm shim so I could use the original Fuch center caps. I'm running IRS on a CMC body and there is little room left between the tire and the body even after filing the wheel arch.

The front caps just snapped on with no problem.

The alloys on the car in Gordon's pic are 16's. Compare them with the 15" alloys in MikelB's pic (near the top of the page)- 16's look like they use the same center section and the extra width is an additional polished "band" just outside of the ends of the spokes.

Re fitting 15x6's (with your 185's) on your car- how much rear fender clearance do you have now? It looks like edge of the tires on the alloys will add about 1/2" to the outside, but that diagram doesn't account for the tire bulge you have now with squeezing the 185's 4 1/2" rims (the tire will sit differently on the wider rims), so it will be close. Only one way to find out- let us know how it works out! (preferably with pics). Al

PS- Is your car irs or swingaxle? And when you drill your rear drums for the new pattern, you'll need studs, so have them handy so the new holes will be the right size for the proper press fit. Porsche studs are a different diameter than some aftermarket ones.

Ronin, it will be close.  The fronts shouldn't be a problem, but the rears may be.  Don't forget that most replica bodies (pan based cars) sit a bit to one side.

Years ago I bought a set of 195/60x15 tires and mounted them on my replica Fuchs 6x15 (37mm offset).  They easily fit in the front and just cleared the driver's side rear.  Unfortunately, they rubbed on the rear passenger side.  I had to replace my 195s with 185X65 which clear the rear passenger side by around 2 mm.

Awesome info guys.

Yes, it is a Swingaxle VS.

I just can't get into the Previous Owners Black/Moon (Police Car) look.  Also the 41ET seems to sit way inside.  What does Kirk usually provide wheel wise?

One more thought, anyone "downsize" to a 14" Fuchs?  Guessing brake clearance issues.

As soon as I rebuild the Kadrons, I will move on to the wheel project. :-)

Yes, that's my car.

Long story short, I bought the car in 1999 and sold it 4 years later.  3 years after that I bought it back from the owner after a nasty engine fire. I worked on it for a couple of years then sent it back to Intermeccanica for a total restoration.

It's a pan based car, with a 2275 engine, and (soon to have) Porsche 901 gearbox.

The fog lights are mounted on the bumper.
