Here I'm killing two birds with one stone. This is Steve O'Brien and me when he visited here as he was going on a Caribbean cruise. I had a chance to meet him and his beautiful family. My 5 yr old. daughter just had an instantaneous bond with Steve's wife. I'm glad everything came out alright with your operation Steve!

Went to the DR last November...very disappointed!! Rained 5 out of 7 days but the place was just a s**t hole. Not the resort but the rest of the place. And didn't feel comfortable at all. You guys should try southern Portugal, the Algarve. We have at least two speedster owners over there...

Now I'll have to try and find a picture that shows my best side...if there is such a thing.

Brian
iguess we'll have to agree to disagree Allan. The wife now flatly refuse to ever go to the Caribbean again..we've been to DR, Bonaire, Jamaica and Bahamas. They all have the same flavour (except Bonaire which was just too boring for her but I thought the windsurfing was exceptional!)...you might as well walk around with a "kick me" sign on your behind. All the locals seem to be out to do just that...in some way or form.

But I've known folks who have enjoyed it very much. They're usually the ones who get off the beaten paths...me I'd probably end up beaten and left for dead on the path.
I'm with you Brian. Don't forget the armed guards at the entrance to the resort property.
I've been there three times.
The first time with work/friends, stayed on the resort no trouble. Drunk most of time.
Second time with another couple. No trouble on resort area but if you wonder down the
beach there is a large sign with mounted /armed police saying "You are leaving resort
property and we cannot safeguard your person beyond this point"----I pooh-pooh'd and
walked past=no trouble.
Third time went into town with wife. Huge amounts of sales pressure from street folk,
plenty of begging etc..Not comfortable or fun but again no real trouble.
My friend was there two weeks ago. On his way back to the airport his car was bumped by another. Pulled over went back to discuss was robbed and stabbed==no fun.
My other friend rented an enduro 125 and was run off the road and left in the ditch.
Woke up a day later with his jaw wired shut (broken) along with other issues.
Yes it's a good deal, it's the poorest island in the caribean. But poverty pushes people to
extremes. Stay on the resort.
I'll pay the extra (alot) and to Bermuda or other. In fact the above and other reasons have
put us off all the islands except Ireland (which I just spent the last two weeks)
Safe, fun, beautiful(cooler) and the beer is much better than any of those other islands.
I'll have another pint please!!
Bermuda, ah yes, perhaps one of the greatest vacations that my family ever enjoyed together. We stayed at the Marriott, Castle Harbor, which was a delight, but I understand that facility has gone condo...:-(

We went during Holy Week a number of years ago, and found ourselves building kites the first evening. Apparently, it's a tradition to fly kites on Good Friday. It was fun, but I couldn't get mine up, in the air that is. I guess I should have paid better attention in physics class.

We rented a scooter and two mopeds and had a ball, mostly staying on the right (meaning left) side of the roads. We went helmet diving with a group and had a great time discovering the sea life, even the eels. I think Sarah may have squashed one while trying to get acquainted, but don't tell her I said so. Horseback riding on the beach in Warwick was inspirational as well.

And then there was "high tea." How very proper and British to have tea and sweet treats in the late afternoon. This is a very civilized place and I look forward to returning some day. I understand that occasionally there may be an Elderhostel held there; we live in hope.
Yes a bit high priced but I think it has been said here before
"ya gits what ye pays fer". The hotels charges are crazy (I have paid them reluctantly). But if you search the web for guest houses/cottages
you'll find them very nice and some share beach/services with nearby hotels.
