Does anyone have a nice clear picture or two of their pan alone (no body) with just the SWING AXLE trans and axles installed. Maybe a series of assembly pics from a couple or three angles?

A VW pan complete with trans installed. Anything like that?

Maybe a few good links to some pictures?

I have the VW swing axle trans pretty much installed in my 356SC, but I need some reference pics on the stock VW installation.

On a VW the shocks mount forward of, and under the axle tubes and connect to the upper mounts which are cast pieces and comprise part of the torsion tube assembly.

The 356 shocks mount rearwards of the axle tubes and connect to mounts welded to the inner fender wells.

I need some pics of the bare VW pan assembly to see if I might be better off rotating the tubes to stock VW position and fabricating upper mounts that mimic the VW positioning and angle. The 356 seems to mount the shocks straight up and down, I THINK that the VW set-up is angled preventing some of the side to side movement that a panhard rod would normally do.

Anyway, I need pics before going any further. Any help ? ! ? ! ? !

Thanks !

Thanks Guys ! !

Cory, for showing the assembly intact, and Ben for the great shot featuring that weird angle that the upper shock mouts have.

LOTS of work to get done.

I think that I'll finish measuring and start chopping the torsion tubes/beam out of the front end first and get to the back end once I score an entire axle assembly.

I figure that the front will be a nightmare of measuring and precise welding. If a thin caster shim makes ALL the difference in a stock Beetle pan, then I'd better be darned close to stock when welding the VW beam in or the car will be un-drivable on the highway ! !

Thank the Masons for revealing the mystery of the triangle and plum-bob . . .
Copy that on the Masons. too bad they killed the metric system, huh?
Hey, if you're going to hack up the front end and it's anything like mine, I can give you some advice on how to make it easy.
Lemme know. There are a bunch of chronological photos of the beam-shortening on the Hoopty in the paininthebug folder.
It wasn't hard, and didn't take long. We did that in about four hours with two guys.
