Man, these are frickin priceless!!!! With the permission of the members, I was wondering if it was OK to use some of these pics for a restaurant "project". Of course it goes without saying "The names and locations of the people in this story have been changed to protect their identity." would apply.
I've got to do some redecorating at one of my places and I want to do a retro theme wall size collage` of cars, bikes, etc.... I'd like to use some of these pics along with some others I've acquired from books and magazines. Just think, you could be forever ensconced in the history of one of Wilmington Delawares finest dining establishments!!!!
Well, I guess there is no surprise among us why Dusty is always smiling. Yo, Betty Grable move over!! The LMS is in town and -- holy cow!!!! Lovely indeed.

And Mickey is pretty circumspect about what his redecoration "project" is at the rest. My guess is he is going to repaper the men's loo, and so these shots will help him do that. I'm just sayin' . . .

tj:

My 2nd was a 356B S90 coupe. Still looking for a good picture of me and that car. May take some time to find it. Sure wish I had that car now. You're going to hear that line a lot in this thread.
Kelly,
That is a good question and a great story ... I traded it for my oldest daughter !! :-) True story. The Doctor was a friend and just prior to Teri's birth we were having dinner and he asked if I might someday sell the truck. I had a new Ford Parcel Van ordered for my horseshoeing mobile shop so agreed to give the truck to him in exchange for his bill and the hospital bill. He agreed and eventually turned it into a hot rod.

For years I pointed out he got the best part of the deal because he could put his end of the trade in the garage and TURN IT OFF !! She hated that story until she was about 18 and now tells it to anyone who will listen.

Also, in those days when you sent in a good trade to Mother Earth News (Barters and Bootstraps feature) they gave you a free year's subscription. They liked mine so much they gave me a Life Subscription.

Now there is a story you will probably tell others yourself. Just one more thing to keep the LMS shaking her head and watching me close.

Happy Trails,
Dusty
Mickey: go ahead and use whatever picture you want...even that one with the short shorts !!

pic 1 - my '66 cal-look bug again before i traded in my girlfriend for the 5-spokes...funny thing is, my brother married her twin sister so now she's my kind of my sister in law !!

pic 2 - high school...around 1969...my bright red '64 Ford Falcon ....i thought i was sooooo cool...

pic 3 - i was around 15-16....and 'my ride' was my thumb...this was 1967 and i hitchhiked from the canyons of OC up the coast to the Monerey Pop Festival....

Vince,
i don't remember too much about Monterey due to the pharmecuticals i was taking for those 2 days but if you watch the movie, you can see my foot and my 'borrowed' desert boots during the Canned Heat set...

in '68 i went to the Newport Pop Festival held at the Costa Mesa Fairgrounds right in my back yard in OC...fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, i caught a severe case of hepititus there laying me up for almost a year and ruining my liver to the point that i flunked my draft physical since i was number 67 in the draft lottery....still don't drink to this day because of that...
Frank.
I was also at the Newport Pop Festival in 68 and I didn't do any drugs so I remember it well! I'll never forget Country Joe doing the "Fish" song. Give me an F, give me a U, give me a C.....you know the rest. It was so loud, that it could probably be heard all the way to Newport Beach. I thought for sure that the police were going to shut it down at that point, but they didn't. Any chance you also went to that festival they held in the canyon above Laguna?
Troy
Troy - i went to a lot of music things 'back in the day' but don't remember going to that one...where/when was it held? who was playing? what i do remember of Newport was the mud pit and Blue Cheer playing a rather raucous set....love 'Summertime Blues!'

Jim - don't get me going about the hair thing as i must have subscribed to Tiny Tim school of hair styles back then! but seriously, i have had an affinity for VW's all of my life as my 1st car at age 16 was a '64 bug and have lost count of all of the bugs, buses, squarebacks and vanagons i've owned...as for the pics, i was in a VW club in the early 70's and took a lot of photos of all of the Bug-Ins, rallys and street races we did back then but sort of misplaced them but still looking...found some pics of the old club cars here and there on the internet but really not the same...

anyway, some more 'rides and toys'...
- my trusty '63 corvair that got my through college...it's the one i said in a previous post that was stolen but abandoned a block away due to a thrown fan belt
- my off road truck that my son kind of took over as my old bones can't deal with all of the bumps any more!
- Oceanside in the mid 80's...my ex, AJ my best friend and the 'toy'

BTW, i'm getting the '30 year old wonder' dusted off and hope to get it running again in a week or so...it's been sitting for about a year now...maybe to the beach if it ever cools down...107 in the Temecula Valley....what's up with that?

re Corvairs:
Bought a two year old '65 Corvair for $1500. Drove it for twenty plus years and 250,000 miles. Sold it, still running, for $500. How's that for depreciation?

My son's auto shop instructor in high school had a late model Corvair powered by a small block Chevy residing in the rear seat area. Ya think that didn't inspire some teen age boys (and girls) in auto shop?
I saw a car called the Piranha at the Monterey Historic races last month. It was a Corvair powered racer from the 60's that was featured on The Man from Uncle TV series. I had the AMT model back then. This car kicked butt in it's class and won the race at Laguna Seca. It ran against some serious cars too! I'll try and find a pic of it on the track.
Here is a photo of my wonderful wife Beckie from the late 60's. It was taken at Road America in Wisconsin. She just reciently passed away of early onset Alzheimer's. We had lot's of fun racing my EP Speedster in SCCA back in the day, and I have many fond memories of her and and the fun we had in my Speedster.

There actually is a story behind the beard...
Short version....used to get in trouble in High School for not shaving in the morning, Vice-Principle made me dry shave in his office by the afternoon....
Got in trouble in the Army for not shaving in the morning, Drill Sargeant made me dry shave by afternoon...
funny thing is, I shaved in the mornings, but by afternoon, I had stubble...Said I would never shave again, once I got out of the Army.
I never have since August 1968....
