Blake and Jen,
And all SOC members,
I was thinking it would be fun to have mini trophies that could be handed out each year at the dinner banquet. We could do different trophies for "best improvement" , "best in show", funny categories etc. We could do it with an anonymous vote and the trophies would be passed to the new winner each year. What you think? Has this ever been done before?

Derek, great idea! I know it hasn't been done in the last few years, I'm not sure about before that. I think the guys back east do awards. I think it would be a fun addition. Will you make it happen and take care of the details?

Angela, I love it, but I think we may have the same winner again and again. Don't you think so BB? ;-)

Also, Everybody mark your calendars: June 1st - 3rd, 2012!

Jen
Jen--in the East we have 4 awards; longest drive for Speedsters and Spyders and longest distance traveled for each type. The awards pretty much move around with different attendees receiving awards each year.

The Carlisle show organizers offers awards too; a Speedster or Spyder attendee can win one as a best car at the show and there is an award for the "club" or group with the most cars attending and the Speedster/Spyder group has wone that each year for the past 4 years (at least)

I am looking forward to seeing Jim's video--he does a sensational job with the videos and I enjoy them every year.
Jack's mostly right, so let me expand on it a bit as a past organizer at Carlisle...

Yes, there are four "awards" at Carlisle.

Longest distance driven by a Speedster and Spyder (separate awards).

Longest distance trailered by a Speedster and Spyder (ditto)

We've limited it to those two categories because they're pretty cut-and-dried: Either you drove/trailered farther or you didn't and it's all in good fun. When you get into "viewer's choice" or "best Paint" or some such someone always gets bent out of shape over something so we don't even bother with that sort of stuff. In fact, many of us don't bother entering into judged events at all.

We have, in some years, had other awards to recognize those who contribute mightily to the success of the event but work in the background and don't win the above categories, and I often had something special (or at least a couple of free dinners) for those presenting or speaking at the Saturday dinner.

The actual awards have varied a lot, too, from plaque-mounted model Speedsters and Spyders to plaque-mounted model cars on model trailers - pretty cool, actually and really one-of-a-kind, to vintage Porsche and racing posters, to one-off beer mugs to a lot of original artwork drawings by our own Cory Drake.

Still, you're dancing on cactus spines to get into the "award" business unless you remove the subjectivity from it. Remember: It's supposed to be a FUN event!

I have a cool sawsall if you want to get back in the flow. Ha Ha Ha...and I would be glad to help.

I think you are spot on. Let's Drive. I have some ideas for next year's drive that will hopefully peak more interest in most of the folks. More to come on that issue. This year was a bit of a bust due to the rain and some said the leader went too fast. My new idea will fix all that, I hope.
I agree with Derek, I'm ok with fun/merit based awards. Like funniest story, "golden CV Joint" for hard luck mechanical, most ingenious repair, whatever.

What I do NOT want is a show and shine and the trophies that go with that. Have plenty, don't need more. DRIVE! DRIVE! DRIVE!!!

angela
Best looking co-pilot and most improved seem to be getting into the realm of show and shine... And if memory serves, didn't "The Run" start because there was a group of SOC'ers that wanted nothing to do with the trophies and awards that came with car meets? They just wanted to swap bullshit and DRIVE!! Can't we honor our rebel roots and continue to make fun of each other with snide, underhanded comments one weekend a year, instead of immortalizing them forever with trophies?
The weekend after Memorial Day killed the NorCal spyders this year and probably will again next year. It is already a double-conflict weekend between Sonoma Historics and Parts Haven event. Personally, I'm not interested in investing any weekend for an out of town plastic-car show-and-shine event. If that's the main-attraction activity (yawn), we're out.
Derek, I am with you man! It is not easy throwing ideas out there. Thanks for trying to be creative and adding to the great cruise! It is all about fun, good times and creating memories. Let's DRIVE DRIVE and DRIVE all weekend, but when we are sitting on our Buttocks at the dinner (not Driving) having some laughs, drinks, jokes and being silly go ahead and give out some fun NON competitive NON judged honorable mention awards. Maybe instead of a sit down dinner we could use DRIVE thru instead! Lol! Rain or shine awards or no awards Julie and I are in! It is all about the journey. No ruffled panties or boxers please.
Did somebody mention ruffled panties....I like them.....

So, am I to understand that getting together once a year the way we have is to boring for some of you...you need frigging recognition for something, I hope we're not putting you out meeting like this, some of us actually look forward to this gathering all year and don't need some piece of plastic crap to get us in our tubs and riding a few hundred miles to enjoy each others company....
Some of you should join another Porsche or replica club, you obviously don't get what we are all about....

We could play Pin the Tail on the Superwidebody, have a hula hoop contest, heck, I'd pay good money to see Vince shakin' his money maker for that.

Or just one prize for the Korn Hole King/Queen. Whatever that game is, sounds a lot like bean bag toss with a naughty name to me.
