Todd's picture thread on his new Spyder evolved into a discussion of a potential southeast gathering in March either in Charleston or Savannah. This thread is to toss around ideas and then try and put something together.
So far we have narrowed location to either Charleston (my pick, obviously) or Savannah. The weather in mid-March is usually pretty good that time of year although it can still be chilly and/or rainy sometimes. While there aren't a whole lot of beautifully curvy roads like there are in the mountains, that are a lot of places to go and things to do, plus the food in Charleston is some of the best in the country.
It would help if interested folks would post here and let us know how serious your interest is so that we can scope of the size of the group. Be advised that we will may have to work the date around spring break as hotels fill up then, making rates go up.
Possible activities in both locations include:
- Cruises, or course. Despite the relative straightness of the roads there are some interesting and scenic areas to cruise.
- Eating, lots of eating.
- Touring plantations. Google Charleston area plantations and Savannah area plantations.
- Touring historic Revolutionary war and Civil war sites like Fort Sumter, Fort Moultry, etc.
- Unique bed and breakfast opportunities.
- Walks on the beach
- Harbor cruises
- Patriot's Point (USS Yorktown and others)
A note about hotels: When a group wants a discounted block of rooms someone has to spring for a deposit on all of them, which is quite a financial risk unless they can be sure that enough folks will be coming to cover it. If the group is small or response is uncertain we may resort to an "everyone for themselves" policy although I'd be happy to do some research and make some recommendations.
Let the discussion begin.
