Everyone had such a good time last October in Asheville that I thought I'd start planning a bit early to ensure we had a similar success this fall. Let me lay out my thoughts below:

1. Everyone who came agreed that the location was fantastic and that we should base out of Asheville again. We may want to consider a night or two there (probably at the Hilton again), and a night up in Little Switzerland.

2. A number of folks expressed the thought that moving it a bit earlier, perhaps into late September, would be better. I'm game as long as it's not too early. Early September can still be pretty hot here. What do the rest of y'all think?

3. The Biltmore was a big hit. Do it again? If the same folks come we might want to mix it up a bit. If some new folks come, hey should definitely tour the house. I can arrange another photoshoot for us.

4. Sadly the F'n Pig is no more, so we need Aaron to locate another venue for night 1. 12 Bones on Sweeten Creek might work. It's a converted gas station, so the vibe would be correct. To bad they don't have live music.

5. Tom scored a big hit with the Wheels Through Time museum. How're you gonna top it this year, Tom? Maybe that's the day we drive up to Little Switzerland.

6. I think the Hilton, and the restaurant across the street (Travinia's?) were great, and I would suggest that we do them again.

7. Vince likes beehives.

8. Gerd can't make it.

Lane,
Thanx for getting this started. I hope Hoss will chime in soon, and advise his availabilty (re: Tennessee football schedule).

A few notes:

The Tail of the Dragon is oversold, over driven, over ridden & over police'd.

Only 60 miles north of Asheville is Tennessee' oldest town, Jonesborough (where yours truly lives). US 23 runs right along I 26 & has no traffic at all & has almost as many turns as the dragon.

Linville, Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock & Boone should certainly be considered as destinations, all being 1 - 2 hours from Asheville. There are great places to stay in Blowing Rock & Boone & great food, especially the Daniel Boone Inn in Boone.

A bit earlier in the year will insure more top down time.
All of the places Tom has listed above are good ones. Things slow down after Labor Day. The Mountains have started cool down then. Also an added venue would be the North Georgia Mountains. Just a thought. Oops, beware of banjos! Jonesbough is the oldest town in Tennessee. I feel like Tom does about the Dragon. Food and more food accompanied this the exhaust sounds of flat fours, etc. That's what it is about!
I agree with with Charley! The variety of roads traveled and visions of the States is great. A now place that we left off was Hot Springs, NC. The Chattahoochee Divide for Elk Herd Viewing. Be brave...Sliding Rock. See we can really come up with some really "tourist hidden" places. The big problem is distance to travel.

Lane, your assigned to mark on a map attendee addresses, draw a polygon by connecting the GPS address of attendees, locate the C.G of said polygon. So, we now have the next RUN!
I think the best weekends would be 24-25 SEP or 1-2 OCT. The first would make it a bit tough for Felix to get here, but it is likely to be warmer. I would recommend no later than 1-2 OCT if we want any warmer weather than our usual mid-month. Another option is to do it in the first half of SEP, but it'll still be hotter than blazes in Charleston then.

So we have:
10-11 SEP - Definite top-down weather, but a hot drive for some of us. No fall colors.

1-2 OCT - Cooler drive for the southern contingent, but risk of chill in the mornings once up in the mountains. Better chance of fall colors, although may be a week or so early.

Or?

What say yee?
Lane: The 6-Gap Tour was always the last weekend in September and the weather was always great the times that I participated. Usually a bit nippy in the mornings but very nice or even warm during the day. So I would vote for the first weekend in October. The weather should be very similar, but of course this is right around the time the first cold fronts start moving through the South, so there is a remote chance you could have a chilly day or two in there. If your planned route this year does end up crossing into northern Georgia, you should avoid the weekend of 6-Gap (last weekend in Sept) by all means. With many thousands of cyclists on the roads, it would be a terrible time to try for any spirited driving that shared the same roads.
The challenge to get a date suitable to all! Some can, some can't and some want! There will not be any color in the Mountains until the middle of the second week of October. May have to drive to the Astoe area, Keep in mind the agenda that is preferred by the attendees. Long day drive or short day trips with social hours. A base place and driving to destinations or traveling and staying at multiple locations (2 or more).

As Charley has pointed out...keep it in the Smokey's. And that's a lot of territory! I'll be glad to investigate routes and I promise not to get sideswiped spoiling the run. It would be great to get recommendations from folks as to choices of activities. Last years run was a success because it was not over organized. Keep in mind FOOD and entertainment is fun. Let Lane and I know preferences.

Color on the trees is nice, but I believe that folks would prefer less color and warmer temps. I'm will to go ahead and pick a date in the next week or so if I don't hear alternatives.

So who votes for 10-11 SEP - Definite top-down weather, but a hot drive for some of us. No fall colors.

And who votes for 1-2 OCT - Cooler drive for the southern contingent, but risk of chill in the mornings once up in the mountains. Better chance of fall colors, although may be a week or so early.
Does this mean that I'll have to investigate and sample ALL the microbreweries in the Smokey Mountains? Love it!

Lane and yu'al, we need to pickup on this idea of a microbrewery and German eating tour as part of this year's Run. Beer and Brats does go together. I know one TRUE German Restaurant in the area. Some of their German dishes have to be ordered 2 days in advance!

Stay at the same home hotel (I won,t get lost and sideswiped this year), but drives and tours of different areas and interest. Do I need to get out my Best Drive tour book? I have lots of time setting on my arse, nursing the knee!

Let's here it now, people!

Just added the Fraulein waitress from the website!

Your plan sounds just like what I was going to propose. Let's settle on early SEP, and you and Tom can do some scouting in the area for cruises.

Ok folks, if we plan for the weekend of 10-11 SEP, who's in? As soon as I have a good idea of size, I'll reserve a block of rooms at the Hilton.

This is, of course, as long as it sounds good to the rest of y'all. Jack, it's not THAT much further, and I know Alice would love Asheville.
Ok, so far I hear the following as possible attendees/lunatics:

1. Me. Well, that's a given, right? Especially the "lunatic" part. Maybe I can get Pam to make an appearance.
2. Aaron and his (much) better half.
3. Leon, and hopefully the lovely Miss Marilyn, er, Margaret.
4. Tom Raymond (and HIS better half?)
5. Clint Ownings and?

Marty and Sandy? Gordon and Kathy? John and Sarah? Cory and Teresa? Charles and (Ack! A senior moment.) Nolan and (Damn! Yet another senior moment.) Kelly and (ARGH! This is getting tedious!) Anyone else whose name I am likely to forget?

C'mon Alan and Kim, Bruce and Norma, Barry Hudson. You know you wanna.
As it stands now, I won't be off my rotation until the 3rd weekend in September. I may have to settle for Carlisle only this year. I will get to meet a bigger bunch of folks, but will miss the cruising in my backyard. If my schedule changes, I will be there with bells on (not literally!), and will look forward to seeing some old-"new" friends!
