My ignition switch has 4 positions. This is a four position switch (Accessory, Off, On, Starter)

Left (accessory?)
Straight up (off)
Right (on)
Far right (starter)

My question is can I use the left accessory for the radio with the engine off with out burning up my points etc? I know it could drain the battery after a while but what about the points?

Thanks
Dave

I would certainly think that you could use the accessory terminal, if your car is wired anything like a stock Beetle. If you have a 12 volt test lamp you can test the 12 volt feed to the plus side of the coil with your key on "accessory" otherwise you could put the key on accessory, put the car in first and have someone push you down the street a ways, neighborhood kids work great for this task. Pop the clutch and see if the car starts.

If it does start, then the accessory switch is linked to the 12 volt power to the coil, don't use it.

If the car doesn't start, then all is well but you MAY drain the battery if your amp is huge and the amp draw is massive and you run the wipers, headlamps, blinkers, fog lamps and radio all night.

Luck,
