As I approach retirement I realize I need a good long-term project and I'm considering building a nice 356 replica.  I really like the classic line and look of the 356 but I don't really want to nurse an antique.

My early concept is a blank canvas speedster with a modern power.plant, suspension, and brakes.  After that I'd like to keep it "simple" (no A/C, stereo, etc.) yet tasteful and unique.  In my mind I see that light powder-blue/greenish color that some 550s are sporting.

All that said, the Beck Speedster with a Subaru EJ25, and disc brakes drives my imagination right now.  (As background, I currently own a Lotus Elise which I would keep, and I have owned and heavily modded a supercharged MX-5 in the past.)

Since I'm just in the daydreaming stage this is a good time to be talked into, out-of, or away-from this idea.

So whad'ya think?

Thanks, Todd

Thanks for the feedback so far folks.  Rich, I found your classified ad and photos.  Wow!, that's an incredible car that I'd be honored to own.  However, my idea is to have a build project to keep me engaged and creative.  If it ever warms up and if that car is still in your ownership I'd love to see it nonetheless.

If nothing else it might be nice to pick up some advice from a cheesehead Beck/Porsche guy as I drill down my options.  I have a son who lives in Oak Creek.  He shares my car interests (owns an Exige) and works as a M.E. in the automotive industry.  Maybe we can meet up for a cup of coffee sometime.  (My personal email is my last name plus @wi-net.com)

Todd .... by chance I had Carey build a Suby powered Beck Speedster which he deivered to me at Carlisle in 2013.   Although we had a couple of minor sorting issues which Carey took care of 100% (builder service is very important), the car has been impeccable.  I'm not mechanically inclined and therefore opted for reliability at an affordable price.   I drive it several times a week and it's been as reliable as my DD and a good 1000 times more fun.   I'm still very happy with my decision to go with a new Beck,

Tom---without a doubt your Beck Speedster is one of the finest cars in the entire Speedster replica fleet.  Consider putting it in the judging at Carlisle for a trophy.  I believe you have a really good chance of winning.  Love te car, the color and of course the Raby ype IV.  Man--you have it all!
