Paul (Pat!) my kindred soul.
I finally figured out why I was hung up on calling you Pat. A beloved friend and fellow Air Traffic Controller at DFW Regional Radar Approach was a Buffalo native named, Pat (RIP car wreck). Man, you remind me of him so much it's uncanny. What a wild and wonderful friend. Two quickies on him, then to your post;
Pat loved longneck beers and loved gambling so much that if he wasn't planning a Vegas run, or sucking down some of Texas' finest in Longneck form with controllers and pilots at all our usual hangouts... well, he would call me on a weekday morning and drag me to Billy Bob's in Ft Worth... then the largest (and still) Honky-Tonk on this redneck planet, complete with 20 something bars and an indoor rodeo, and major sound stage..... all to play little old ladies and pensioneers in Bingo... while sucking on a longneck. I was never at his level of craziness, and I don't see you there either... but I see the possibility if we hung out as neighbors. As far as Pat? I humored him and went once a month to play Bingo and drink beer at 10 am with the SAS Loafer bunch. I was 30... so what the ______?
Pat got smacked at a controller post shift parking lot stress reliever back-o-the-pick-up-iced-beer gathering.. A daily or nightly (depending on the shift) ritual for the crews coming off work. Most of us had one or two Bud-Burgers and then left for suburbia. Anyways, Pat had not shopped for an anniversary gift and was one day away from the event... took me and a friend to a local mall, into a lingerie store... pulled on a leopard skin silk slip over his clothed 5-10 200 pound frame while the clerk looked on, and pulled it off, tossed it to her saying, I think it will fit Linda perfectly. I was on my knees crying in laughter... just tooooo much. (Of course Linda was a petite and sweet beauty, but to strangers Pat always made her out to be some bad assed battle-ax).
Ok, to your posts. Your Speeder vison is very close to mine. There is something about that look on Scott's car that does it... and I really like the sparatan - minimal thing on the interior floors, etc. Just enough of a street racer look to really make me happy... and something that has a classic outlaw timelessness to it.
I am looking back at old HVWs and Trends to find that multi-window vintage VW bus some Porsche nut had built for his wife after she crunched their mini-van or something. Do you all reacall it? It was Blue and while... with polished fuchs(?)... but the main thing was that it was a full tilt late 911 underneath in every single way. The bus was awesome... but I don't have the budget for three toys, or the wife that handles more than one toy (ok ok ok... DO NOT Read that wrong, stay in context) in my garage (see!) at one time unless it's a bike. So I am doing one car. In that... I love the idea of a 911 suspension.... and possibly... just possibly either an Ac or Lc 911 engine... all serviceable locally or in any city. Now, my wants and what I will build may vary due to whatever bottom line I think is prudent & reasonable, and also will keep me married to my still blushing bride. These, are two separate standards or bottom lines,,, if you know what I mean? So, maybe just the suspension and a Type IV, built at a reliable level... or maybe a nice 2165 Down's motor ala Dale's. I really liked the feel of his car.
Paul (Pat), if all goes well, we will be back out to LA and up your way, then Oregon looking and pondering on the other Q... a move? In any case.. to Knott's next year and a trip up the coast to play a day or two?
Love You Too Man, (brrrr, how about them Pistons?)

Jim, I'm biased, but I think you're on the right track. This is a great thread. Some nice ideas being tossed out and the coupe concept is very intriguing. The hard part is picking and choosing which can be worked out into a manageable budget. Good luck.
You also mentioned Oregon. Moving? When I was at UT Austin the natives said God lived in Texas, but vacationed in Oregon. Pick up Dale on the way through and we'll race around a bit.

Scott and Jim,
It looks like our early October Southern Oregon tour is gaining momentum, I have a list of 8 or 9 interested parties including Steve and Angela Lane with the Knotts winning 550 Spyder. Jim, Scott is going to be there so it would be a primo time to see his wheels and talk Speedster, can the rest of us listen? Also a great time to visit Southern Oregon and enjoy the fall colors. We are not all that far from Vancover, B.C. so you could stop by and see Henry! Heh, Heh!
Yes, this is a great thread you started Jim and I am enjoying the creative prose.

Is this the right forum to seek an opinion? ;-)
Ok, Fellow Speedsterites and ettes and believers in Tubism a big Q. Those of you who have owned one or another Speedster Replica are invited to share your opinion on what you would do, if you were building again. It's wide open... style-classic-flared-GT-outlaw, canyon carver, or any variation in between. Pick a color, interior..... but more importantly, detail out the suspension mods, tranny, wheels, tires, engine, cooling, guages, steering wheel, exhaust, and etc.
No cheating... so don't go copy George's build list. And for the sake of keeping this non-controversial just keep the builder to yourself. Engine builder is a welcomed opinion, and Type without getting into a squabble. same with any other mods, or parts sources.
I am pondering a build... maybe. I have three builders in mind.. maybe one. But that's just a personal choice, not the reason for this thread.
Build your dream car on this thread... think about it all, gauges, bumpers, yada. I have something in mind... but one thing I know... there are many here to learn from. Knotts was an eye opener. I want to consider the opinions of the best resources in the world... you guys.

I am under the impression (and I could be wrong, wouldn't be the first time) That if I found a coupe for around 13-14k (needing drivetrain work but with a useable interior and exterior) I should be able to create an outlaw for say another 11-12k, meaning I could have
my outlaw coupe for 25k....That would be my limit for a toy car...
It wouldn't need to be perfect, just cool....
There are too many fast cars on the road these days, so trying to be the fastest is stupid....and costly
(I have 4 girls, 5 if you count the wife) that should explain alot...
I lose my Job next week, Engineering going off-shore...
Funds are tight, but I refuse to compromise my fun time and my only toy. But I believe 25K could do it......
Some of you guys have way to much money...

Vince... It's been great to read your posts while I've been down. Next year at LA you need to show me around and have some time having fun.
I have given a coupe some thought more than a hundred times. I would modify it beyond all religious boundries though. Like going to a 901 5speed and maybe a Raby IV!
That black one that shows up at all the SoCal 356 Meets makes my juices flow.... trim and badges gone, lowered to the max... all discs all good stuff 17" late model wheels... very evil and stealth looking. Know the car?
Thanks for the words Vince. You are truly one of the good guys.

Terry,
Theron has distanced himself since the secret weekend together at Speed Week in Daytona. Stole my camera and stomped right of that Motel 6 in Kissammee. Notice how he has been quiet on these forums? He thinks I still have a roll of film from that sordid, humid, sweaty lusty, full take down weekend we had with that female Pilgrim's Pride Chicken cross-country driver out of Conway, 'Arkansas' (Home Of Sam Walton (WalMart) and 2 Million Poor People.... Sam's Dead now and the his kids are living in Virginia... leaving Arkansas the home of The Clinton Library and 2 million poor people)
I'd go with the stretch version, (and it's a great idea Terry) but I've learned that I don't need a full roller of tools and a back up AS-41 case packed in just to make a weekender to Maud, Oklahoma. (By the way. Did you know you have to drive through Bowlegs to get to Maud? It's true, look at any Oklahoma map. Now why would we want to move west with all this cool stuff around us?)
Thanks for the suggestion... I tossed it around in my mind and was trying to think of a good stretched rear engined frame... I immediately thought of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, then came a vision of maybe Campbell's vintage Bluebird (making it Period Correct)World Land Record salt flat car. What a beast that would be, and in a stretched Tub Version would have boocoo room for packing. The only thing that throws me is how to mount Fuchs on either version! (more responses, and even serious ones after a workout and errands.)

Vince, really sorry about the job, and after meeting you at Knotts, it sure doesn't appear that your old enough for retirement. So I wish you well in the job search, at over 50, we're just not terribly appreciated by 22 year old HR people.

Hey Vince,
There have been a few coupes on eBay recently that were in that price range, some a little worse for wear, but that's what I'm watching for and I think $10-12K on top of purchase price is reasonable overall, but were I doin' the matching coupe' it too will be Raby-fied so therer goes the budget...
Jimbob, That was a buss to end all busses and the builder had way too much money in it to be real...and it wasn't the first one he had done either. If a bus needs a little more oomph, that's one thing, but the whole 993 driveline was a waste evenm in my warped world!
Brother Rick brought a pretty to the forum and it sounds like a lot of guys have gritted their teeth on contemplated changes, dollars and the, " Oh what the F--- factor!"
One or the other, I stay with the speedster. Steel may be real but it's the fun in the sun (and rain and fog and dead of night) that gives me the zeal I need to feel!
Last time I was in Victoria's Secret I tried to slip into a little sumpthin' naughty too, but she wasn't having anything to do with me!

I'm back from the Movie and it's late. As I said, I'll join back in tomorrow guys. But before I turn in... here's a picture of what I think is an incredible Outlaw Coupe. THIS is what I would go for with the full tilt option tray filled on suspension, tranny and motivator. If only I could do both a Speeder and a Coupe. But, alas.. one must choose, and that is why this thread exists. There are so many possibilities. This picture turns me on, and it fires my burners & pumps my G suit as I point my nose towards the Coupe Image dancing at my six. Look at this for 30 seconds and then see if you can shake that image when you think of neo-outlaw..
I lean heavy heavy heavy to the Speeder, but this image sticks to me like glue... like that girl I met in Sydney on R&R... (but that's just another war story or an episode in my own personal life in The Naked City.)

Vince,
If you can build (or have built) a nice $25K steel outlaw, I'll eat my hat. I know the numbers look like they add up now- but 6 months (or more) into the project, you'll be lucky to get out under $35K. All this stuff is one-off, and costs a ton more than you think it will going in. Good paint and bodywork alone on a 45 year old steel car is going to chew up $8-10K of your budget. There's no such thing as one thats 100% rust free. Steel is real all right, real expensive. Rust never sleeps.

George,
You would be surprised if I took you up on it. Here's something... I may. Visually I think I could duplicate it at reasonable $$ in the IM world of reasonable. But it's all that detail and special attention stuff mechanically and otherwise that would take it into the out of reach zone. Well.... you know, it's not exactley out of reach. I am still playing with the bottom line... there are several factors in play now that effect it.
What I would try and pick up on after looking at and studying your beautiful IM is; what parts could I incorporate in mine that work with what I would be driving towards in terms of overall goals and expectations set by a bottom line.
Momma just got her new Southern Living, and I was thumbing through it because I was hungry and they had pictures of the best fried chicken in the South.... while thumbing through it I saw an article about an upscale dining and etc district in Baltimore. I thought... ok, If I do go IM, I would definitely look at your car BEFORE I settled out the build sheet with Henry... and maybe that would be a nice place to buy you lunch after we went through the car. The only thing is George... you being a gun seller and all? Well, I'd have to make a rule... no Class III weaponry on board... just in case the DC boys stopped us inside the beltline while you thrashed that baby out for me. I mean I am a Patriot, and I act like a Patriot... but I don't want to become a victim to the thugs that run the Patriot Act. (Aggggghhhh , a political rant in a useful thread. Ceasing The Spew)
Seriously. I will fly up if I go with something that started these juices flowing at Knotts, thanks to Henry and Dale and a late night beer..
Thanks... Jim

Guys, I'm finally back. My wife is really getting max mileage out of the fact that I wrecked HER car, her personal hand selected car... I could never replace it, yada, yada, yada.. know what I mean? Now I have a great wife, and I have zero complaints. All I am talking about is the reality of women, and someone you share life with so much that you already know the route to each door prize or gag gift. I am working on door prizes now, like this Car we are all secretly building for me here.
I am deeper in penance though as before another dinner and another show tonight I was using the power washer on some tainted & stained rock walkways.... I was walking backwards and tripped over my hose (the power washer hose... mine doesn't quite hit the ground). In front of God, neighbors, and her I yelled 'motherf**ker ,so a b, sh*t' as I went down. She was not pleased. Nor was I. New neighbors down the way were soaking it all in with hands on hips.
Anyway, so I need to go share pie and coffee with the new neighbors that joined us at dinner and sit out on the FRONT porch and work on making things appear ok. Ok? ok. But before I go.. thanks for the responses, keep 'em coming. I will keep going down the thread responding to each and asking a Q or two. I want to get max input from each of you and excahnge ideas. My man Vince hit on something very profound today... it doesn't have to take a lot of money. I'll say what I said at the start of this. If something happened and we were to take a big hit (not anticipated).. I would contnue to drive and be so very pleased with my great VS. Money is cool... but uniqueness, coolness, and something that fits are more important and money doesn't buy contentment or happiness. My VS fits good. I am just in a spot where opportunity allows a possible nicer fit. Yes.
Vince, my Nam bro... I'm pissed with what happened to you. I am also sorry Vince. Something is wrong here.... what's going on in this country?
I will respond to everyone's posts as I work down the thread tomorrow and Sunday in between my parole work at home. This is fun guys.
Thanks Jim

Jim, I don't know what temp it is for you at 9am, but we have just gone through a week of 90 in the shade and the car gets driven hard all day with no cooling problems. That is with an oil cooler and fan mounted in the right rear wheel well. That's sitting in stop-and-go traffic, and cruising on the freeway at 80. The clutch is a Kennedy stage 2 (2100) and is no problem. I've been driving in flip flops! I'd say that is streetable. Because I wanted it to be streetable is one of the reasons I went with IDFs instead of IDAs.
Which reminds me, one of the things I would add to your list would be fuel injection.

I think a Raby type 4 with a 911 type cooling fan that he or Dario is working on. Probably just get a built 4 speed to handle the extra torque (or toke if you'e from the south). The TUBB is running well but I need a new exhaust and I'm going to have some work done by my friend who used to own a bug store. Brakes and a few things underneath that I don't like to do. I really have be enjoying it the last few cool evenings we've had here in the deep mid atlantic. We don't get this too often.

No 911 systems for me... Its not looking like I'll be utilizing the 911 system at all- not even doing any further development with what we have already done..
Darios set up will have to be proven on one of my engines before I'll use one.
