In 1972 I traded in my red '69 MGC roadster for a new '72 White 1.7L 914.I wasn't aware alloys were available so got the appearance pkg with the 5.5" wide steelies and dog water pan hub caps.  Definately plain Jane.  I later opted for some Fuchs-like hub caps from JC Whitney - think they were $29.95 for 4.  They looked like Fuchs from 50 feet but were thickness of a pot pie tin.  I've seen them since for big bucks and always get a laugh looking at them. (I tossed them after they got really dented - but hey, they did decrease the sprung weight of the wheel).  I polished the original 914 hub caps and hung them on batchelor pad living room couch over the black pleather couch --- cool.
