I recently discovered a Porsche

Don't know much about Porsche industrial engines but I've seen regular VW Type I's with 356 powerplants. From what I've heard the 356 engine fits VW trannies with minor modifications, if any.

just my opinion, but i would restore and keep that engine (for fun).
and use a vw for my car. your plan sounds too troublesome vs payoff

The Maestro had a description of reworking Posche industrial engines to operate in Porsches. i beleive it is included in one of the popular reference books in the "Library" here. I would imagine Jake Raby knows the ins & outs of this process.

As much as I love everything Porsche, it would seem to me that there are a few reasons folks use VW power; reliability, flexibility, and expense concerns. IMHO you are taking an expensive non-car engine and making more expense to convert into a car engine and when you are done you will have a real expensive engine that doesn't really perform as well as a relatively inexpensive engine.

If I had come upon an engine such as yours, and it had the outer appearances of a typical 356 engine, I would clean it up and place it on a pedestal in my front yard. Seriously, ask Rick, I think a shrine to 356s would be sort of cool. I'd trellis a potato vine on it maybe.

I have rebuilt these before. Most were made to run elevators at job sites, or cranes...etc. even generators...

They can be converted, but they have all kinds of mismatched parts from various 356 powerplants...
