Forgot to mention...

I've got a 901 in my IM and I put a Weltmeister short shift in it. I had to make some changes as usually the 901 shifter is held on with 3 bolts but on my car there were three studs welded to the frame. I had to cut the studs off then drill and tap new holes for the three longer bolts that came with the kit. The kit is basically a 1/2 spacer (and longer bolts) that lifts the shift mechanism up then the shifter is about 1/2 longer from the ball down and a bit shorter in overall height.

I really like the positive, short throws now. Its like "click" into first, then "click" into 2nd, etc. I also took the opportunity to change the bushes in the mechanism. They wear out easily on a 901 trans set up and lead to very sloppy shifts.

If you have a 915 then there are other kits but they usually start about $315 and up as the 915 had some inherant problems...namely when downshifting it was way too easy to pick 2nd instead of 4th. These other kits try to deal with that problem. Remember when the IROC championship was 911's? I read once that this was even a big problem with those cars when driven by professionals!

Pick up a copy of Excellance and you'll notice a lot of vendors selling kits for the 915. I think that Velos (spelling??) is a popular kit.

A few months ago there was a article where a guy was building an early 911S with 3.2litre and was installing a 915. He detailed all the work and parts that went into upgrading the trans for shorter throws and to lock out the downshift from 5th to 2nd.

If you're interested I can look up back issues and let you know which one???
