Try the Pelican Parts BBS, into the used 911 section. You can even post "wanted to buy" for what you're looking for.
The 915 is definately much hardier than the 901 and you've already noted the shift pattern difference. Actually get used to that really quick, in fact the other cars seem "wrong" after you drive a 901 for a while. But the 901 has poor support for 1st gear.
By the way, motor meister pooh poohing a 901 transaxle for a manufactured weakness is like dennis rodman making fun of somebody for dressing funny... Hope you aren't haveng a motor built by them.
