Nascar!? Off the thread a bit - I was reading an article in a back issue of Motor Trend(?) about a journalist that got to drive a Jordan F1 (2002?). Anyway, he was blown away at the braking in the car; he said he just couldn't seem to get the hang of it and kept braking too early. He mentioned braking of 200mph to 50mph in 100yds! He also was having trouble grasping the change in characteristics as the down force decreased, apparently those cars, theoretically, can drive upside down at 100 mph, holy crap, that much downforce!!! 0-125mph in 4 secs. He said the difference between his run and Michael Schumachers was Michael was braking 4/10's of a sec later in the turns, his best run was 40 secs behind Schumachers qualifying lap last year! Those cars are just incredible! Just a week and a half before F1 season starts!
I actually like NASCAR racing - but as you all know I'm DEFINATELY a redneck. Broke my heart when Dale Earnhardt died.

I'd just like to see them turn some direction other than left. I think maybe a figure 8 track with a bridge/underpass arrangement would be kind of cool.

Its the sound you know. Bellowing V-8s... Love 'em. Sure wish I could go the the Porsche swapmeet though. Steve and I actually considered making a run for it - but decided we would work on his cabby instead.

John, That is by far the best NASCAR description I have heard!
Nascar is cool and all, until you have seen Rally, F1, American Lemans... I could go on and on... But then I would just be like Nascar. Left, Left, Left, Left, Left, Left...

No more V10s in F1, but a V8 revving at 20k sounds pretty good.

Ahhh....I remember that post - droolworthy! But not for the 904. Not wholly decided yet, but I am leaning toward a 993 varioram. We intend to run AC on the car.

Of course, I may just say fuhgedaboutit and buy a regular 993, dump the intake and ignition and run big fat ole PMO carbs with electromotive ignition. Car will have headers (with either engine choice). With the vario, we'll add a chip to the mix.

No matter what I decide one thing is already determined. 300 air-cooled HP. Nothing less is acceptable.

angela
Yep, the idea even gives ME wood!

And 300 hp is (as you know) completely realistic. Lowest power 993 is 272 and 285 for a vario with the 3.8 running 300 thru cats. Of course, I can't afford a 3.8 so we'll start a little further back. But with a chip and good exhaust, 300 is a realistic number.

Lambros, no plans for the US Grand Prix. My buddy went out 2 years ago for the "6 car race" and said it was insane! My wife and I had a trip planned 4 yrs ago for the race in Barcelona which got nixed because she got pregnant, I was pretty bummed (when I find the guy who....ha). It's already been "explained" to me that if I am ever going to see an F1 race it will be with her, no kids, and more than likely Monte Carlo, although she would settled for just about any race other than the US, even Canada. In hindsight I think that article was in an Automobile back issue though I'm not sure? I may have gotten some of the quotes wrong, the guy did mention that the Jordan was detuned.
I'm very excited to see what happens this season, new drivers, new engines, new teams! Ferrari is said to have the advantage, which being a Ferrari fan, is good news. I'm very curious to see how Kimi and Fernando do in their new cars!? It all should make for a great season!

Angela, 300hp!!!!!! YIKES!!!!! How do you plan to keep it on the road? There is no doubt it's attainable but can that car really handle all that? Won't you have to do MAJOR modifications to everything else on the car - ah la Cory?
Vince,

Call my cell 423-612-2700
I am at the Renaissance on Paradise, next to the convention ctr

I am not a redneck, but I live 20 minutes from Bristol, where if you see a wreck, why your in it !!

Working the NASCAR race this weekend. If I wasn't working, would I be here in Vegas............No

This non redneck has a 2006 Mexico Blue IM, the 40th anniv. 911, and the wife drives a '99 M3 cab. Just sold the 62 Vette & thinking about a black '07

Mickey,
The car is to be built with an integrated roll bar (yes, properly braced). Full tube frame with 911 front suspension, double A-arm rear with coil-overs, front and rear anti-roll bars. We'll add 911 turbo or better brakes (e.g. Big Red etc) 23mm master cylinder, adjustable bias. May go aftermarket for the master cylinder as we want the pedal assembly to slide (seats are fixed).

915 transaxle, WEVO side shift conversion, Quaiffe LSD, 7 and 8" Fuchs 225 and 245 tires, like 17" Fuchs (custom by Lindsey Wheel), built in fire-suppression, five-point belts.

I'm very serious about this car and have put a great deal of thought into it. We learned a great deal from building the spyder and the next build (the 904) will be a light year ahead of our current car.

And of course, the 904 will be Steve's (so I get the spyder to myself!!) angela
Holy Crap! That is gonna be one awesome car! You can rest assured it'll be the only one like it, which is pretty cool in and of itself. I've been trying to figure out what I want to do next and my head is spinning. Everytime I see something cool I go "Yeah, that's it! That's the car!" From a "Cory-mobile" to a JPS Coupe-Outlaw style, to a Formula V or 500, to a muscle car, on and on and on...... and now you come up with this, Arrrrgh!
I've kind of resided to easing my way in with some Auto X this summer. Also attending a few hill climbs as a spectator and going to racing school to get my Novice SCCA license in July with the hopes of being able to hill climb in 08. I'm sure that path will lead me in the right direction as I'll get exposed to so many options I haven't even contemplated yet, but in the meantime I'm going crazy with Car A.D.D.!!!!!
I'm getting back into Auto-X myself this year. I did quite a bit of it long ago in my decadent youth. But if you don't practice, you lose touch with your "inner fast." I've lost my inner fast. I remember him, but we're not in touch right now.

The local club won't let the spyder run so I'll just take the station wagon. The wagon is 220 hp, its actually pretty spunky, not along the lines of the spyder by any means, but it will do just fine for re-learning those skills.

Of course, there's a GREAT intake for this car that actually puts a dyno proven 23 hp at the front wheels....hmmm....

Jim - Got the message. Nose art, aye.
Angela - Holy sheep droppings!
Mickey - She's out of my league, bro. Whatever they're smoking out there in Oregon, I don't have the gonads to try something like that. My car's a go-kart compared to the werks they produce in their driveway.
Chris and I did a "Track Day" at New Hampshire Intn'l Speedway mid-last-Summer, the weekend before a major NASCAR event. There were a few Busch Trucks there practicing amongst the SCCA cars using the track (mostly for driver education and practice).

I got a ride with a professional driver/teacher for the SCCA, in his Lotus Elise; Turbo'd Toyota running gear under a tiny, crafted body, and GIANT brakes (UNBELIEVABLE stopping power!!)

As we went out onto the track, we got a little static from one of those Busch-Series trucks, so Bruce, my driver just said "Hang on" and we were off. Whenever we hit a turn behind that truck, I would see him start to brake and we'd come up on him real fast and then we'd brake, maybe .75 - 1.5 seconds later than him. After about four turns (we were on the road course), we passed him and he just kept losing ground, mostly from the Lotus' far better handling and those BRAKES! (and, maybe, because we had about 1/3 less weight). After about ten laps, we had him by about 3/4's of the front straight and could have kept gaining, but the passenger was getting a little ill...... |>(

The track folks at Watkins Glen LOVE to watch the antics of the NASCAR guys negotiating the turns of the road course there when they come up. Far less elegant than the SCCA and/or F1 cars, but the brute force and bellowing NOISE is something to behold. Closest thing we saw of that at the Vintage Races there last Fall were the Trans-Am/Can-Am Mustang class. Fast and loud.....aqnd great to behold! (Right, Hoss??)

gn
Actually, Esther, it was a train that did the damage. The transport vehicle was "stinger-steered" and hung up on the tracks. ka-blammoo.... Porsche's everywhere. An entire transport load of exquisite vintage porsche's destroyed.

Actually that is one of the better looking victims. Some were much much worse than that.

RIP little cars.
