Recently I experienced the L/R Carburator Fuel float bowl inlet fitting had detached from the carburator. No Engine Compartment Fire however I had a large "Fuel Spill." I reconnected the fitting and ensured the problem would not surface in the future.
Yesterday, I was at the local VW Shop and the owner of a Karman Gia came in and was purchasing replacement parts due to an Engine Compartment Fire resulting from the "Carbuartor Float Bowl Fitting" having detached.
Precaution & Remedy is very easy; grasp the fuel line where it attaches to the Carburator and give it a "Twist or Tug"; ensure you aren't going to pull the Hose Clamp & Fuel Line from the fitting. You are testing the fitting for tightness within the FLoat Bowl not the fuel Line fitting. I cleaned the "Pressed In Fitting" and applied small amount "JB Weld" to fitting and inserted the fitting back into the inlet orphase. If the fuel line were to detach its connecting clamp should be tightened as well.
Some Carburators have threaded fittings and they're tightness & connections should be monitored for loosening & Fuel Leaks.
Good Luck & Carry a Fire Extuinguisher.
