I'm not trying to be smart... but WHY? These cars are exceptionally light in the front end already. My wife, who has trouble opening most doors, can easily drive my pan-based car. I can't imagine why you would want power-steering, not to mention- wanting to add a pump to an already crowded engine compartment, and run a set of hoses to the front of the car from the back. Really. It's not that kind of car.
I see your point. I am just asking because my steering wheel has some play or actually the steering wheel slips when I turn right or left. So when you see the steering wheel its fine then it slips and it croked the when I turn the other direction it slips right back. This usualy happen when I back but or steering wihtout much speed. The car runs straight though no matter how the steering wheel. So I am asking becuase if I need to do work maybe this might be an upgrade. Any one know what might be causing this?
Aj: You have a very worn or mal-adjusted steering box. If you're not mechanically inclined, you should find a good VW repair shop and ask them to take a look at it.

What might be happening is that, as you turn the wheel while backing up, the steering gear within the steering box slips a tooth or more on the steering shaft which makes the front wheels turn left and right. Other times, if you're turning the other way, it slips back.

It might be adjustable to fix it, but if it's worn a lot you may need to get it replaced. There is some danger here, since it may decide to REALLY slip when you're motoring along and you'll possibly lose control of your car - not good.

Get it looked at very soon.
