Been away for a bit....

Yes most of those trucks start off from here. Usually about a truck (or do they tandem them?) every 18 minutes 24 hours a day. Its almost like a rally start. This place is overrun by transports at that time of year but, as with much of Yellowknife, they're not made to feel welcome. We're nice folks up here but it seems we really fall down on organized, structured hospitality for visitors. Not that its not nice to visit but you have to be prepared to find and do things on your own.

The ice road is only part of it...the road that they take to the beginning of the ice roads, The Ingrahm Trail, is a very narrow road. I wanted to live out that way but was discouraged from doing so by the amount of trucks travelling on it....its down right scarey and dangerous! That road claims a couple of lives a year.

I've yet to see this show about the ice roads...some day perhaps. Its not a big deal up here as we have to drive over one to get out of town in the winter and there's a couple in town...one across the bay that we use to get out onto the ice to go kite skiing. The Japanese tourists all find it facinating...you can see them lying on the road getting their pictures taken. Its odd the first time...and when the ice cracks with a bang you think you're going to die. But its 4 feet plus thick...plenty strong.
I've had the IM out twice so far this year...a total of about 30 minutes and a few kms. And not in the winter when those trucks are using the ice roads.

Nah, no ice now for kiteskiing. Have to wait till November probably. I've got stuff to give it a try on pavement or hard packed sand/dirt...perhaps in the fall as its windy then.

Am planning a trip to the eatern Arctic at Christmas...Whale Cove in Nunavut. There are some picks of my last winter trip there in my folder. The wind really howls there and there will be ice and snow for sure so I'll bring the gear. As long as its not minus 35 and howling wind I'll be out on Hudson's Bay kiting.
