I noticed a speedster for sale a couple weeks back with junk on the doors due to the tonneau rubbing off. Today @Sacto Mitch encouraged me to ask my tonneau cover guy about how to prevent this when I install mine. He apparently has the same problem.

Anyone here solve this yet? I like the idea of a full tonneau, but I don't want my car covered in black junk.

My full tonneau would flap in the wind when I was drive with only driver side down and scratched the top of the door.  3M (I think) is making a self repairing clear bra, just add water.  Track down some of that material and use it, maybe?  I am not sure how you will ever keep color/dirt transfer off the dash.  I would just clean the vinyl when it got really dirty.

This is more an annoyance than a problem.

I have a light colored car (Ivory) and a light tan canvas tonneau. But for some unfathomable reason, the tan tonneau is dyed black underneath.

Yeah, black.

Maybe someone thought that would make it more stylish. Are the Parisian couture houses showing a lot of black this year? I'm usually slow to pick up on the latest fashion trends.

What it does is leave black smudges on the doors and back deck and on the top of the (light tan colored) dash vinyl.

These come off pretty easily with a quick swipe of a rag with some mild solvent - not enough to hurt the paint - but it would be better if there weren't any smudges to begin with.

Maybe I should have waited until next season to get a tonneau. I hear tan is coming back.

He's saying to put the clear bra material along the top of the door.

My tonneau is made with Stay Fast material which I'm assuming is a brand name. No issues whatsoever with anything coming off and no marks along the top of the door. I have a silver Speedster and would notice if it did. I never drive with the passenger side up though.

So, am I the only one with a tonneau that leaves marks? Do youse guys have the black dye on the underside?

This is the stock canvas tonneau that came with my VS in 2013.

This dye transfer is called crocking. Occurs from improper treatment of the raw material at manufacture.  Mordants, of various compounds can stop the transfer,  and help set the dye, but at some cost to the desired original color.

My brother in law  is a chemistry Professor at Chico State. I can ask him for further details if someone desires.
