After posting a question related to an exhaust system for my CMC speedster, I thought i'd post pics of just what I'm working on.

Classic Motor carriage speedster kit, 1776, 041 big bore heads, engle W-110 cam, single Dellorto36mm DRLA carb; freeway flier with a short throw kit; on custom built tube frame, aluminum floor pans, everything is tucked inside the centre box of the frame, adjustable beams front and rear, discs all around, 2004_01011Image00032005_09090001frame20411Frame Jan2805body3body2

Nice fabrication skills.  Keep in mind that with your flat floors your seats will sit 3/4"higher in the front and 1-1/4" in the back than those that are bolted to the dished OEM style VW pans. I ran into this a number of time with builds I had bought, you'll need to figure a way to keep the seat tracks flush on the carpet and still have enough space for the seat tracks to slide and not bind into the carpet.

never even thought of that...it won't hurt to have the seat up a bit, I'm 5-4...i'll just have to get the fore and aft heights set to keep it aligned....

Take it from all that have gone before you... Dual carbs are easier in the long run.  Cutting that decklid inner support will be the first step towards a lot of regret.

In the event you cut it... I have a complete and uncut replacement center section here at the house. You may need it later on down the road.

If you have no experience with dual carb installs on an aircooled engine the concept can seem a little overwhelming, but once you wade through it you'll see it's not as difficult as it originally seemed. As mentioned, lots of plusses to running a dual set up- better power, smoother running, and better mileage (as long as your foot isn't into it ALL the time!). Then there's the hassle of making a single fit in a Speedster, and as Mike mentioned, a single without proper preheat just doesn't work that well- I've heard of single carbs icing up and running poorly in high humidity with the temp just below 70'F. You'll do a lot of stopping for a minute or 2 and letting the manifold warm up. You'll be way more successful with some 36 or 40mm Webers or Dellortos, or even a set of Kadrons. The engine will just run that much better.

And as Greg said, the red poly stuff is garbage (and downright dangerous for the steering coupler!). You'd be further ahead with VW parts and a Kafer bar.

Hope this helps. Al

PS- What size tires are on the pan?
