Friday morning, the guys from the local firehouse are coming to help flip the Hoopty's chassis over for final welding. Then she's going to be moved to a different garage and the blasting/powdercoating will finally happen -- and then I'll begin the engine and transmission work.
Yesterday, the footwell front panel from four days ago was fabricated and installed, along with the trim pieces for immediately behind and inside the doors' trailing edges. Those were a bit tricky.
The footwell has a hole in the middle of it for a universal joint in the steering shaft, and it couldn't be a perfect circle for a number of reasons. That ate about two hours to fiddle with and get right, then the two pieces of sheet metal had to be stepped to overlap. The bead-roller was modified to accomodate, and we made a couple runs before we got it right, owing to the gap in the line where the cutout is for the U-joint.
The engine tins and door pulls were another project yesterday. I'm not happy with the door pulls yet, since I had to use bigger rivets than I wanted to. They can come off in the future, and I'll re-work them at that time.
We're under pressure of a real deadline this time, unlike the self-imposed Carlisle thing -- this time, we have to be out of the garage by the 17th; the car has GOT to roll again at the very least, and we've got to finish welding the torsion before we have a repeat of that disaster.
To get to that point, we have to take the door sills off and flip this thing. To do that, we have to have the fit and finish of the trim pieces right. To do that, we have to eat the clock for a couple days of fabrication ... and so on. Photo captions to follow, along with more photos.
