Literally.
The boys from the local fire department came and helped put the jalopy on its back for the finish welding of the belly seams. While she was inverted, we grabbed the opportunity and finished the rear torsion, the front beams and head, the tunnel and any other open seams we could find. There were more than thirty points we needed to fix, but all except the torsion were spots we couldn't reach with the wand before we flipped it over.
The fire dudes showed up at 10 a.m. for the rotisserie, and came back at 4 p.m. for the righting. (They were in service for calls the whole time. Truth be told, I've worked with these guys long enough that I think they'd have come over if I was putting a barn up.)
Other stuff we did this weekend included the fabrication of the upper section of the firewall and patching holes in thin areas of the original frame head.
The upper firewall piece needed to be connected with welds instead of rivets, and it needed to be supported by both the firewall itself and the downriggers for the hoops. It now meets the body over the doors and has a slight gap below the rear hatch, exactly as I had hoped it would. I'm pretty proud of that little bit of engineering.
There is now expanded metal under the pedal assembly for drainage of the driver's floorboard. There are five-point seat belt bolts for both the driver and passenger and there are also holes cut in the forward and rear bulkheads for the wiring to run through.
I feel comfortable saying there is nothing left to weld.
Interesting side note: when we aired the tunnel out, there was enough loose material in the tunnel to fill a dustpan, including the essential "Bug Acorn." Ever notice there's always one acorn somewhere in a Beetle?
I'd really like to hear what y'all think. If it looks like I'm missing something big, don't hold back!

Cory -

I suggest you change the caption of yourself from "Mr. Meathead, Design Engineer" to "Intense Looking White Dude with a Bitchin Car".

You're almost there, my brutha, one step closer to putting the Hoopty Project on the highway.

Let your brethren of the SOC know the date and time you fire that bad boy up so that all in the SOC realm shall honk/beep/blare their Speedster horns at that exact moment to commemorate your achievement!

Peace - Out!!
Lane, if I can, I will. Still a couple (more) weeks away.
Jim, I'm not so intense ... maybe just 'incredibly focused.' -- In the same way a black Lab is. They'll stare at a ball that isn't moving for MONTHS. Sounds all too familiar.
Nolan, you have a new MSPaint-ed version of you in the Newbies thread. ...

'Intense Looking White Dude with a Bitchin Car' ... That's kind of cool ... Thanks! Here's the shot that came from.

For anybody who met Jim Sartwell at Carlisle (he had a bad afternoon ...), he's officially moved his operation to Odenton, MD, from Severn. We got everything out of the old shop yesterday, and it's all now strewn about the new location.
I'm not advertising for the guy; I helped him move. I'm sore as hell, and there's going to be ANOTHER lengthy delay in the forward progress of my jalopy.
I'm going to have to get the sand-blasting and powdercoating done soon, because my car's going to live outside under a cover until he gets situated. Might be as long as two weeks.
Anyway, if you're trying to get in touch with him, let me know. I've got the new numbers.
