The official report today from The Wrench is that he stayed home to finish up my engine, and at last update he was cleaning the pushrod tubes for re-installation. He expects the engine will be back in the car not later than five tonight.
I didn't lift finger one on this job yesterday; he did almost everything for me this time. The moral of that story; stick with someone in trouble long enough, it comes back around.

Good for you Cory!!!! You'll be rolling shortly.
Cory - good luck with your project! Hope you're back on the road real soon!

Cool! Total Seals, huh? The cylinders and pistons look good too; you'll have a blast!
Cory,
Glad to hear the Wrench has made, or is making, progress, you're a good man for hanging in there. Warm weather is right around the corner! I guess I should check in with my wrench to see how my rebuild is going?

Cory,
That picture of the 103 pistons sticking out of the block, hanging off the 71 crank, really hurts - that's exactly what I use to push me down the road! Now I'm paranoid about how it may look in there.
Wishing you an early spring my friend.

I saved this post to throw back at you the next time, hopefully this coming Carlisle, that we wigs out on you . . . don't say it, and NEVER put it in print, unless you mean it!

You get right down to it, VWs have always been about karma ... right?

Here's some updated artwork:
This is the engine, all re-assembled. The cylinders didn't get painted orange this time, 'cuz there's some kind of epoxy-looking coating on them already. I don't know what it is, but it didn't look ferrous.

This is the new mechanical temperature gauge. I had been meaning to put this guy in for a while, and The Wrench did it in about twenty minutes. I had forgotten it was in the bin.
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m231/paininthebug/DSCN0141.jpg
The backside of the gauge, and right above it is the new BugPack breather box. That guy was also sitting in the tote bucket, waiting on a rainy day.

I got permission from Revell to use their corporate logo as a karosserie badge for my right front fender. I want to paint the logo on the old CMC build plaque, since the number came back as a motor home anyway. It doesn't do me any good, but I think a model kit logo on a Speedster kit plaque is funny -- and the purists will leave me alone.
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m231/paininthebug/DSCN0147.jpg
I cut the Revell logo off of a helicopter model kit, and then stuck it on the car to see if it had the desired effect. (I'll put this up to a vote.)

The fuel line connections to the carbs hadn't ever been painted, and everything else was shiny and new-looking, so The Wrench broke out the chrome paint and had a go at them. You go, Picasso!

The car as it sits right now ...

I asked about this in the old 'show us your exhaust system' thread, but this muffler is stainless and came off of a roughly 2,000cc motorcycle. It has baffles in it, and it fits underneath my bodywork, but I have a Spidey-sense feeling that it's going to sound like the cars on the infamous Speedster "D" Fart-Pipe Tuner-Honda Association calendar. "D," if it does, I'll give you my mailing address and send you ten bucks.
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m231/paininthebug/DSCN0161.jpg
Feedback would be appreciated -- especially on the karosserie thingie. I know I'm a dork, but I kinda would like a group-think on that one. It could be the new Corpse badge, for all I know ...

OK, the Revell badge gets my vote. I always liked the detail that Revell put in their models.

Not real nuts about the Revel badge - sorry. I have something else in mind for da Hoopty. I was trying to find Wile E. Coyote riding the ACME Rocket - but this was as close as I could locate.

The motor looks ready to rock! I like the Revell badge too; the header looks very cool; I hope the muffler doesn't end up making the motor sound like it looks....it definitely looks at home on a fart-can-sounding rice burner.....cross your fingers....
I love the Revell but I'm leaning toward the Coyote Rocekt Sled, for some reason that one just seems to fit - In my animated little mind I can easily see Cory sitting on a rock contemplating the entire Hoopty Project (ahhh yes, he is a super-genius).
Is this what you had in mind Angela?

Three out of four are in perfect order; the fourth is garbage. PM or call? A fair offer and they're yours.
They'll be on eBay otherwise. I'd rather they go to someone here.

I think the Revell decal would look best on the windscreen. You know, in the location that most 356 Porsche owners put their PCA decal.
When we were down at the 356 get together in San Luis Obispo last year our registration cards identified our cars as replicas with the Revell logo on the card as well.
It was our idea and the real 356 group loved it as well as our cars.
BTW, I have the little VW hand sign decal in the corner of my windshield just in case somebody doesn't understand my FAUXSTR license plate.

He's still around but Now builds comercial Gyro copters at Carter Aviacion.

Wish I could draw... I would dry a picture of a VIKING riding a rocket! That would definately be Cory!

Still think a "Transformer" toy decal would be best as that's what Hoopty looks like when opened up.
That's a good one, Alan!

I'm in a bit of a quandry on paint again, Jim.
I'll be waffling until the gun hits the car, but now I'm leaning toward the same silver with two stripes; one wide orange and one narrow dark blue.
I'd be putting a graphic of some kind -- probably Wylie E. holding a rocket and wearing a Transformers helmet or breastplate ... on a fender. ...
Click, click, click ... whrrrrrr ...

Re: Color Choice
Ahem. Errrr. Ahhh. Well, you know.... Silver IS the appropriate color for racing cars from the fatherland*.
*The opinion expressed above is not necessarily that of the staff or management of this website. Your mileage may vary. Side effects include dizziness, nausea, cold sweats, and anxiety. Silver is not for everyone... ask your Dr. to see if it's right for you.......

Idunno, in my current somewhat inebriated state (I'm at an OMG conference for all you computer geeks) I still reeeeeeeeeally like that darker powder blue color of that coupe that Angela (I think) posted. That would work really well with all of the suggested graphics. Hell, I'll see Cory for dinner tomorrow night, so I'll tell him in person.
Silver or flat black. I liked the Le Mans idea but you're right, after seeing it on a scooter, well..... I'm diggin the silver (sorry Angela) idea with the Wile E done up on the driver side tunnel, paint the rocket the same orange as the hoops!

How about something just a bit more subtle, yet still keeping with the suggested theme, for a Karosserie Body Badge?
This is just a first version photo-chop quickie, but you get the idea . . . any/all changes are possible. The finished file could be printed out on water-slide decal transfer sheet and placed on a nice aluminum plate, trimmed to size and shape, held in place with stock fasteners. Subtle and sweet.

Maybe ?

TC, you're on. Make the rocket orange, park a helmet and goggles on Wylie -- and name your ransom.
