So after 2 years of fixing up my 356a it is ready for its safety inspection.....good old NJ. Car came from Nevada. So the DMV inspectors were more than happy with the mechanics and build of the car.....pat on the back for me......but......they tell me the windshield doesn't have AS-1 marked and should have it. The windshield is from Vintage Speedster so waiting on a call from them. Any advice/similar experience and solutions?. Other issue is they need an official document referencing my 'F' series engine # to prove it is a 1966 1300cc. My buddy Anthony copied a page in a parts book that shows the reference but the book is not very official. My new buddy Al suggested providing a number of references so it crosschecks. So can anyone provide official type references for engine numbers with year of manufacture and size etc......preferable something with VOLKSWAGEN on there somewhere.

Thanks so much.
Phil

Phil,

Might be a pain, but way back in 1983 when I first titled my VW based MG TD replica in NJ, I had to verify the engine year.

I took the car in to a loca VW dealership. They gave me a letter on their letterhead verifying the engine number and year.

I'd bet most VW dealerships are looking for all the good "pr" they can get right now, and will likely help you out.

Is chassis a '66 VW too?  SAMBA has a technical listing that gives chassis and engine number by year.  "Scotty, I need more power!"

Of course, an F-engine could be from a 1965-1970 VW.  Why do they need to know exact year of engine?  Aren't all VW engines 25 years old exempt from emissions - an F engine would be 50 years old.

Any questions that concern the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission and begin with "why"

(as in "why do they need to know the exact year of the engine?")

are answered:

"Because it's NJ."

The DMV guy told me they need to know the origin of the engine, size, year of manufacture so they can classify for future inspections. He said once i prove it is a 1966 then i wouldn't not be required to go through emissions.

I found a listing in a Haynes Manual this morning, Just wanted to see if i can find one more reference so they have no room for argument. Maybe a VW Technical Manual or handbook. That should do it.

Thanks Guys

The chassis is a '69 the engine a '66 and i think the steering rack is a '68.....kit cars sure make mutt cars look pretty.

F case in the USA is 1966 only, 1300 cc. That's what I had in Bridget when I bought her. She also has a 1969 chassis. How about that?

Mine had larger jugs, probably 1500, the PO said. He couldn't remember for sure, as it had been near 40 years since he did the rebuild.

All this was documented in the paperwork I got with the car. Luckily, none of it mattered in MD, where the car has lived all its life.

Good luck, Phil.

Phil,

It's easy to find out what year your engine case is. All the sources mentioned in this thread are good ones, and we know they are accurate.

My concern is the NJ MVC staff telling you they want an "official source." Even the Bentley manuals, as good as they are, are still an aftermarket product/resource.

If you want to ensure you get this done with one trip to the MVC office, I still think a certification letter from a VW dealer is your best option. They may even look it up in a Bentley manual.  But nothing else is going to say "Volkswagen" at the top.
