First off, I would like to thank all the folks who contribute to this board as it is a wealth of information. I am looking to purchase my first Speedster after looking at them for years. At the end of the day I enjoy the concept of a speedster, but I'm not well versed at determining what a good car is, and which cars I should stay away from. So far, this is the list I have compiled to help me evaluate each perspective car. Please help me refine/add to my list and give me specific items to look for to determine weather I should pursue the car.

1) Who manufactured the car (IM, JPS, VS, TR, CMC, or Beck) or was it purchased as a kit and assembled?

2) What is the frame of the car? A bug or tubular? Is there any rust on the frame? Any appearance of any accidents?

3) What is the milage of the car?

4) What size engine is in the car?

5) What is the condition of the fiberglass shell? Are there any stress fractures? If there were stress fractures, where would they be?

6) Is there a 3rd breaklight?

7) Does the top fasten tightly? Are there windows? Sideflaps? Roll-up?

8) Do all of the electronics function property?

9) Are the brakes drum or disk?

10) How does it drive?

11) Your suggestion....

Hi Mike,

Your questions are all reasonable, and a fine place to start. Others who build/tweek/flip replicas will have you add specifics to your list, I'm sure. If you're not a wrenching kind of guy, please consider having a local air-cooled shop in your area do an inspection for you when you get to the serious stage. Your choice will almost certainly have some variation of a VW air cooled engine. It would be good for you to know if there are any air cooled shops in your area at any rate. If you tell folks your location, someone will likely recommend a good shop. Best of luck to you.
SoCal may have more speedster replicas/square mile than any other part of the US. There are lots of knowledgeable folks in your area that can even point you toward/away from a particular car, and they have a current knowledge of value. Angela raises an excellent point. Google CA SB100 for a few day's worth of light reading. That's the CA state senate bill that authorizes a type of registration for replicas that keeps them emission exempt for life. Happy hunting!
