I MEANT to saw, before my spelling went wonky is:

Nope, just wires.

All that a starter button does is provide battery power to the solenoid. Essentially a single wire from the positive battery terminal to the first button prong and another wire from the second prong to the solenoid. Push the button and 12 volts goes through the wire, through the button contact and to the starter solenoid.

Easy peasy.

TC, can you just turn the key to the 'on' position and then push the 'start' button? (so the key stays in the 'on' position until you turn the motor off).
I notice that with a Honda S2000 the driver has to turn the key with his right hand, (and hold it in the start position) and then, with his left hand, push the start button.

On mine, the key turns one notch to energize trhe accessories and the electric fuel pump, then I hit the starter toggle switch until she lights and then release - very cool.

A very easy mod. take the wire from the "starter" terminal on the key switch and move it to the push button or toggle switch. Then jumper the "accessory" terminal on the key switch to the other terminal on the push button or toggle.

As everyone already posted. YES! And that's the coolest part.

You turn the key to "on" position. That puts 12 power to the coil, then pust the start button and DISCO, you're off and running.

If/when the car stalls out at the light because the choke isn't set or the car HAS no chokes in the dual carbs. You just punch the button and you're off again. No turning the key off and on to start and blah, blah, blah

The button is really a ton of fun. I had one strapped to the shifter sort of NOX/PTO style. It was a ratty old Empi that had rusted up and the button looked like it came out of an old semi tractor and it was held on with duct tape and I felt like Mad Max every time I started the car, and did THAT ever set me up for "trouble ahead, trouble behind." It was a BALL. I can see why the button is coming back with the big manufacturers.

Luck,

Porsche made a boxster commercial a couple of years ago that featured an original spyder. During the sequence, there is a very brief closeup of the start button on the dash. It just seems to be such a cool way to start the car.

The commercial is in the "Sightings" section at spyderowners.com. You can use this link once you login.

My wife used to push my 46 Ford for me when we first got married.........but that only lasted one season and then I got the ultimatum of "get that thing to start right OR ELSE!"

BTW: I placed a picture of my 46 in Photos under nichols1 with the view my wife most often saw of me. It was a screamer when it was running, though.....Full-race flathead with dual Stromberg 96's, bored out over 100 thousandths, Edlebrock manifold, planed and ported heads, 435 lift-294 duration cam, and a "Kong" ignition, all running through a Lasalle 3-speed (on the column).

Oh! and it wouldn't start because there wasn't enough vacuum from the cam to pull the accelerator valves shut - found out how to rework the accelerator valve springs and it was cured (and the wife was happy!)
The Clapper ideas has given my an idea for something similar...sort of. I'd call it the 'Fartter'. Just sit down in the driver's seat and 'cut the cheese'....motor starts by itself, and away you go. It could work on either sound or smell. Might not work too well on a first date, though.

Charlie:

I've seen a number of Street rods with keyless entry and ignition - they typically have a small keypad on or near the dash that you use to enter your keycode and then push "*" and it starts by firing the starter solenoid. No key or anything, but DON'T forget that kecode!

Browse through Street Rodder or Rod and Custom Magazine and I'm sure you'll find one.
I'm getting into this discussion late but have a question or two. Was the push button starter on all speedster years? and where was it located? My 54 coupe had the push button start but can't remember location. Looked on 356 registry and found nice photo of original speedster with button just above key but also found one where either it wasn't there or was on left. Found a button in McMaster-Carr catolouge that looks like it might be just about right. P/N 69755K63
rated 10 amps @12 V. 5/8" dia cutout, 3/4 OD X 1-7/32 LG price about $7.00. One thing I do remember is that the push button does allow you to crank engine without having it start that in certain cases is usefull like various maintenance work. Also if you stall you don't loose the radio on the restart.

The correct position for the starter button on original 356 Speedsters is directly above the ignition switch. The starter button was discontinued with the introduction of the 356A, when it was integrated with the ignition switch.

Interestingly an original 356 starter button recently sold on eBay for $255....
