I've researched the site and have a small bit of knowledge on this, but, I'm also in love and love is blind!

I have found a car that I'm thinking about purchasing, it is off of a 73 vw motor and special const spyder, it has a nev registration, tag and pink but has a CA plaque in the door jam (hopefuly the pic is attached correctly!)

if anyone with any kind of help can point me to the right direction; I don't want to go buy the car and then not be able to drive it (although I've done stupid things like that before)

thanks in advance

Sam

PS, advise will be rewarded by a pint of guiness :)

Since the car has a Calif. Vin attached it will have to be certified by the Bureau of Automotive repair and pass smog if you intend on registering the car in California.

If you really want the car then I suggest you buy it, get a temporary registration from DMV and make an appointment at DMV for the first available spot on January 2, 2009 and get registered under SB100.

That will allow smog exemption but, you need to get all your ducks in a row and be able to get the appointment. Only 500 exemptions are issued each year and all are gone by 11:00AM or earlier.
CA DMV will use their affixed VIN to register your car. You'll pay for your reg and get temp tags to carry you through Jan. On Jan 2nd, you have to camp out at DMV offices to get one of the 500 SB100 numbers "awarded" statewide. You'll then have a choice at the Smog Referee of testing your car at the year built or engine year.

It's a bizarre process. Know that DMV will take your registration fee and sales tax up front. BTW, there are several of us on this site in your shoes. Come on down!!
