Face it, there's just no explaining some things in life.

Like, why is it 'i' before 'e', except after 'c'  ? They could have have just left it at 'i' before 'e', period. That would have made a lot more sense.

I think Vintage Speed is just toying with us. They spend a lot of time getting details right and in finishing things off well that don't really need to be. Details matter to them.

But then they make a rubber boot with no lip on the bottom to tuck inside the housing and keep dust off the little, greasy ball. And they know damned well their customers are obsessive types who care about how things look.

Yeah, they're just messing with us.

I wouldn't say it's always i before e except after c.

Why just the other day I asked the concierge to bring me some codeine for the pain and he gave me caffeine instead. That didn't work so I asked if he'd bring me eight dreidels but he wouldn't. I found him to not be a very efficient worker. Then later I learned that three heinous heirs committed a heist after hitting a heifer with their car. Today was 100 degrees Fahrenheit when the foreign financier feigned shock when the police closed in on his fraud and he was forced to forfeit the freight he purchased with counterfeit cash. He no longer had to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders as the stress weighed heavy in a weird sort of way.

Why make a rule and then break it in so many ways?

Speaking of thread drift....I'm going to remove my new Vintage Speed shifter.  It's really a nice piece of machinery and works as slick as advertised.

It's me.  I installed it this past spring and spent the whole summer trying to convince myself that I was comfortable reaching just 2 more inches to reach 1st and 3rd. I'm very comfortable where my seat is now and it was my mistake for not ordering a longer shifter with more of a bend.  Just file that under "live and learn".

I guess you could call that madness.

I attach my shift boot to the carpet with a row of Velcro tape (the hook side, not the loop side) around the bottom of the boot, on the inside, about 3/8" - 1/2" from the bottom edge.  Place the boot over the shift lever, push it down at the bottom onto the carpet and it sticks.  Depending on the velcro "pull force" you use (it's sold in weak to heavy-duty industrial grade release force) and your type of carpet, it should stick without releasing.  The tape I used was something like 1/2" wide and comes in either strips or a roll at Home Depot, Lowes or a fabric store like Joanne's or some Walmarts.

What height/lenght are you using Al?.

Just to clarify, here's what we're looking at.

The base of the Vintage Speed shifter is finished off nicer than the stock VW, so, in theory, you don't have to bother with one of those Corinthian leather boots. The 'boot' we're talking about here is the rubber collar that, mysteriously, falls just short of sealing things up nice and purty:

@Al Gallo, you might try contacting Vintage Speed (although they can be slow to respond via email). They're a pretty small operation and have been known to work with customers to solve problems like yours. They might swap out a longer lever for you or even make a custom one with more of a bend.

I think the length is 11 or 11 1/2 inches. 40% shorter throw or something like that.  I have fairly long arms and I thought I would be fine with it but not so much. I think VS offers the longer shaft with a bend among a whole bunch of other styles.

I have a leather boot with velcro that matches the seats, etc. so one of the first things I did was swap the pretty allen head bolts for some 13mm hex heads to make it easier to adjust from the driver's seat.
