Are you referring to the $3 quick shift kits? The kit is essentially an aluminum spacer & ball which effectively changes the location of the pivot point. It will work ONLY on oem VW shifters and not on aftermarket shifters.
#1, Shift into neutral & remove oem VW shifter via (2) 13m bolts
#2, Remove shifter housing up & over shift shaft
#3, Install fulcrum ball unto shift shaft & re-install shift housing
#4, Place aluminum spacer on center tunnel
#5, Install shifter assembly on spacer & install longer bolts
The aluminum spacer kits do work but require a lot of fine tuning with a 13mm wrench. Drive around with teh wrench on passenger seat for a while until optimum setting is achieved.

I have seen a plastic copy of the shifter spacer. I would not use that.

The best way to go is with an trigger shifter or t-handle. They are just so much more solid. It's $40.00 well spent.
i cant get a shifter with a handle that long.... see the picture below... this is why im trying to make something work with what i have... the builder of this car positioned the shifter pretty far back, probably not knowing that you're not supposed to drive with your hand ON the shifter - but that it should be very close to the steering wheel instead so as to grab it quickly when you DO need your hand on it.
