Hi Jim, Dan, Vince et al...

I have Henry beginning my IM build, and am pleased to say I have laboured over making a handsome twin to Dan's gorgeous chiffon white speedster up here in B.C.! Thx again guys for your coaching and input on finally arriving on my colour choice.

One question.

I am wrestling around whether Henry installs the tunes under the dash, vs in-dash. I need your input.

My gut tells me the visual integrity of the dash is more eye-appealing if the modern isn't mixed with the old.

How have you dealt with this? I definitely want a CD/MP3 player to accompany me as I cruise my Whistler hwy, but not at the expense of 'dash aesthetics'.

Thoughts?

Thx gang...
Ray

Ray,
Please do not mount the radio in the dash. In airconditioned cars, I believe that Henry mounts the radio in the airconditioning plinth under the dash. When Henry installs power amps they are mounted in the rear cushion and hidden. Perhaps you could find a hidden stereo that can be mounted in the back and controlled with a remote, perhaps a head unit display mounted low under the dash or something?

I have seen something like this but cannot remember where.

I hope we meet this summer at the Intermeccanica BBQ!

Ray; I agree with the above posters; original 356's (at least Speedsters) had a bracket that was mounted under the dash to put the radio in. I wouldn't mind a modern looking radio there as long as it's mounted in the correct bracket. I'm sure you can get new reproductions as I've seen them offered on Ebay. Maybe you could check with Klasse 356, Mid America Motorworks (formerly Tweeks), NLA or any of the other Porsche parts suppliers.
Hi Dale, Ed, Ricardo and Justin,

Thanks guys...you have confirmed my desire to keep the dash 'organically 356'...

I get it.

I will pass your thread along to Henry, who will naturally do the right thing...

Thx,
Ray

P.S. Looking forward to catching up with you all at the first '356 Huddle' post-delivery!
Ray, if you are interested in a retro Blaupunkt Frankfurt Speedster set up, updated to a new PLL tuner 180W amp, etc, plus an input for Ipod, MP3, Sat., CD Changer, etc, let me know. I have the sources and links for you and the price is affordabale. As was mentioned, they mount under the dash with a repro plate you can buy from NLA or on E-bay. If you have a/c you can't do it.

If you just want power for an Ipod (etc.) I woud buy a 4 way amp from a source with a jack to plug in your Ipod, plus a toggle for sound, volume, fader, balance that can mount under your dash hidden. The amp could go under your dash too. All hidden, for not a lot of $$.

Let me know.

My VS unit came with the radio mounted under the dash. It sure didn't look very "period" for a '57 so I hid it very simply. I put a small spot of velcro on either side and cut a small piece of black felt to put over it. It is simple to pull off when I need to see the face plate or to just push adjusting buttons without removing it. It blends in so seamlessly that no one notices it. My wife even asked me if I took it out!

By the way, anyone reading this please note that I am still looking for a good buy on a 550. Keep me in mind if you find one.
Hi Jim, Dan, Dusty,

The photos really help (they look great on your cars!) - I have forwarded this thread to Henry...I am getting A/C so this has to factored into the 'dashboard real estate'...

Jim...I will be in touch after I debrief with Henry...and thanks to you all again for the coaching.

Best,
Ray
HI Jim and Dan,

If you could email me your respective phone #'s, I would love to follow up the week of the 27th...

Henry has my frame and body complete, so we will have to address the 'tunes' within the next fortnight...

Getting excited! (as if I haven't already been since my first post last October!)...

Thx guys...
Ray
hey Allan the idea of the radio being under the dash and you press a button and the radio drops down and forward is one that i have started working on. I am going to use an electric window motor to move the radio on tracks laser cut from stainless.

The only problem is that there are a number of things i plan to do before tackling the sound. I will post the design when i do it. The plans for the laser cutting will be made available on the site
