Just wanted to post a couple of pictures of one of the heads that used to be in my motor before I switched to CB 044's. Ralph, my local "wrench", machinist or whatever you may want to call him just cleaned them up and put on some kind of preservative gooey stuff that's used by the manufacturers. These things look brand spanking new; I just wanted to treat them like that to be able to put them on indefinite storage.

If you notice at the top of the head, right side, there is a threaded hole for some sort of sensor. Well, I found out that such hole was not plugged and left totally open to the atmosphere when the motor was built, hence the constant caked on grease that I always found accumulated on the engine tin on that side. I always wondered what was wrong with a new engine, now I know....

Hi Jim; I'm not sure but I suspect that hole is there for some sort of sensor; maybe for fuel injected cars? I suspect it is because my engine case didn't have the stud to mount the thermometer bracket; I've heard those are newer fuel injected longblocks. Since Kirk at VS has a supplier for OEM VW Mexico longblocks, I suspect this was one of those engines which was later retrofitted with carbs.
Sartwell (the younger; my Wrench pal) is known as Jimmy, and his dad is James. Both are pretty well known in VW sport-compact drag racing, so you'd have to be specific. Mr. Sartwell, the elder, used to race the bejesus out of a Camaro 35-40 years ago when 'stock' was STOCK.
Nelson knows everybody here -- Kevin, Austin, Reggie and Elwood, Miles ... There are a bunch of them. I'm sure a whole wad of his parts are surplus to his needs. He's probably got nose cones in his couch cushions -- and he's a hell of a nice guy.
