Yesterday Chrissa and I drove out to Ramona Grasslands which is a hot spot for hawk, eagle and owl research. There is a little known (at least by me) freebie exhibit every Saturday from 9am to 12 in Jan and Feb. Here is the web site http://www.wildlife-research.org/index.php

The scientists trap eagles, hawks, falcons etc every Sat early AM and band them for study. There is a show and tell for bystanders. The birds are released back right after the banding. After the photo ops you go down the road a little where they set up spotting scopes. There we saw a bald eagle and a Prairie hawk. This was the most enjoyable outing I have had this year! Also saw some burrowing owls.

I did not take the little car and I regret it. A wonderful back country cruise opportunity missed.

Oh yeah Mickey it was 75 by 9am and unlimited visibility, glad I had my sunscreen on. (Mickey, hope you know I'm just giving you a hard time)

Dave, thanks for the insight and the website. Gotta get the wife to that one. Been around SD 40 years and never heard of that resource.

I have the privelege of spending summers in a small cabin on a lake in southern Oregon. Watching Osprey pulling fish out of the lake from the front window is a daily ocurance, as is deer walking thru the yard. In several remote arms of the lake, there are eagle nests and from a boat you can see the adults and young ones in their nests every spring. AWESOME! Makes one think that at least a few things is this world still work as intended.
p.s. Dave,
If you DO take the speedy to this event next time, you MUST continue on down Highland Valley Road to Lake Hodges. That road is a chassis proving ground. I have helped pull more than one overly ambitious motorcycle out of the bushes on that road. You'll like it!
