I currently own a very used speedster replica with a lot of miles that I purchased at an auction a few years ago in Sun Valley, Idaho. It has the basic 75 HP engine and is pretty gutless. I'm considering ordering a new replica from Vintage. I'm looking for suggestions on engines with more zip than I've got that also sounds good. Suggestions?  Thanks!

2332

Gerd's reply isn't the ultimate answer, but close.....   If you talk to any of the really pro engine builders, their first question will normally be "What do you want to do with the car?"

You can get 1915cc engines with from 75 to 120 hp. and 2332cc with 100 to 200 (with boost) hp....  Do you want to cruise, have blinding acceleration,or, have a grocery getter that eats 8 out of ten normal street rides???   Take your pick, but as stated here all too often, "Let Your Wallet be Your Guide"....   My .02....

Randy I can tell by your post that you will be ecstatic ordering your VS with not only a 2332 (which is a reliable motor these days) but you will also want to order a transaxel such as a modified Rancho Pro Street with the .89 4th and a 3:44 Ring and Pinion. Roland Rascon at Rascon Motorsports (Builds motors for VS) can give you the full scoop on this setup. Just my opinion!

a good mild 2332 should be about 150 hp easy.or go up to a 2387 for a bit more ,and still stay reliable if built right and get great mpg. Im building a 2387 for mine.I have a 2332 and a 2028 for my bug. I wish somebody would come out with a reverse dome forged piston for these things wit 3 pin hights.and not cost 2x what they should cost.but thats out the door...

A MUST IS A PRO STREET TRANSAXEL AS RUSTY IS STATING. I HAD ONE AND THE CAR SCREAMED

What do you have for a motor now? A 1776 with stock dual port heads, Engle W100 (rev to 5000 rpm) or W110 (5500) cam, 1 3/8" header and dual one barrel carbs (kadrons) would cost $1500? 2000? to build and produce 50-60% more power than a stock 1600 . For another 600-$800, up the displacement to 1915, port the heads, add 1.25 rockers and new pushrods, and put some 40mm dual Webers or Dellortos on it and now it's double (100hp) the 1600. Add a 78 (2165cc's) or 82mm (2276cc's crankshaft, some ported big valve heads, W120 cam (again, with 1.25 rockers), 1 1/2" exhaust and now it will rev to over 6000rpm with power (150-160hp), have a ton of torque down low for around town driving, get decent mileage when your foot's not in it and be a BLAST to drive. This one will be a couple grand more expensive again, but will be the most fun. Al

As the ole saying goes "how fast do you want to spend"? My fuel injected 2276 turbo eats just about everything on the road up to 125mph and cruises like grandmas station wagon when necessary.

If I had it to do all over again, I would probably do a Subaru powered setup but I know that I would still be tinkering with or upgrading it every time I had the chance.
