I'm installing a new rear bumper on my Speedster. The new deco strip came with the rubber strip attached, and unlike my old one, it has a metal backing to keep the rubber in place. The rubber strip sticks out about an inch too far on each side of the deco strip, and will keep it from sitting flush against the bumper (and keep me from easily marking drill spots, but that's anonther issue).

Does anyone have any advice as to how to trim the rubber strip before I start cutting? I think if I cut too much it will poke out of the end of the deco once it is installed. Thanks.

I would not cut the rubber. The deco I installed many years ago required pulling the rubber out of the aluminum to afix/bolt it to the bumper and then the rubber was slid back in. The rubber was trimmed on the bottom (side that goes next to the Aluminum) so it would slide into the end of the aluminum. If you cut the rubber it may be to short.

Think about it first.
Thanks for the pictures, they bring it all back to me. The rubber has a tendency to shrink over time due to weather and formulation, based on my past experience. I would pull the rubber out of the strip, install the the Al extrusion and then install the rubber. Push the rubber toward the center until you can tuck in the ends. Cut the rubber ONLY if you CANNOT get it in. Putting the bumper/deco assembly in the sun to warm up should make it easier.
