Hi All, talked to Greg at VMC this morning about my tire wearing and the camber being off. He said it sounds like there might have been a shift in the 3 bolts that attach to the trailing arms. This could cause the camber and the toe to be off. He said he could fix it and we will schedule the fix at the end of July. He said the fix would be to align the car then drill a 4th hole through the spring plate and lock it down with a 4th bolt that is not slotted. I will also go with Koni shocks and add a mid trans mount while its down there. So that's it for now ............ Again thank you guys for the advice and support.

When I did my trailing arm bushings last winter I tried to put everything back together without changing any of the slotted bolt positions. But, try as I did, I could not—cannot—understand how those bolts and slots would effect anything but toe-in/out.

Any wisdom would be appreciated.

fwiw, my torsion arms already have a fourth bolt with no slot. Seems to work like a jamb nut but I could not see the geometric logic of that either. And, yeah, I did fiddle with the assembly some with the wheels off the ground, trying to figure out what was being adjusted by way of these bolts. It did elude me.

I was just reviewing this thread, as I've gotten behind while I have been undergoing a bunch of dental surgery lately, and one page back, @LI-Rick asked me this:
"Gordon, I have never seen nor heard of putting a wedge between the spring plate and trailing arm mount in 30 plus years of playing with VW’s.  Could you please point me to some place where this is shown?"

I don't know where the hell my post came from, but it was at night on the day I had two dental implants plus two root canals in one day - I don't recommend that to anyone, but you must act when the specialists are available - and I was living on Tylenol and Codeine that night.  In other words, I was a bit loopie.

Rick couldn't find any sources of that because the rear hubs on an IRS/swingarm rear can't be adjusted beyond set limits unless you either bend the diagonal/trailing arm ( usually from an accident ) or replace it with a new one, and Rick knew that.  Thank God no one paid any attention to me or the post.

Thanks, Rick, for questioning it and I'm thankful that it didn't influence anyone's decisions.  I strive to offer honest and accurate info on here, because that's what we all deserve.  I wouldn't trust anything from me for the past week after June 4'th, when this all started, along with the pain blockers, maybe through the end of this week, too.  The implants went well, but I'm still dealing with root canal issues on two other teeth as they keep finding new roots to canal.    Who knew my molars would have three curved roots each that are hard to find?  I'm beginning to feel like Boston's famous "Big Dig".

Thanks for being understanding, I apologize if I misled anyone and I should be myself again, for better or worse, by next week as this all comes to an end.  In the meantime, I'll be posting less, just to be careful.  Just don't pay me much attention.

Gordon
