Do you have to drain the tranny fluid before install?
Replies sorted oldest to newest
yes, drain that and the radiator and you're good to go!!!
Just kidding...no draining of anything necessary...just bolt it on
Wheres my radiator? Yes...I too am kidding. Thanks! nuts was worried that undoing the side nuts might cause a leak or something...
Todd you are my kind of mechanic. Thanks for asking what needs to be asked.
And thanks to you guys that answer those questions!!!
Backing off the nuts didn't cause any leak when I installed mine, but I had to back out the studs about 1/4 " also to fit it in there. Good luck
Also - I have the oil cooler ground to one of the nuts on the tranny. I would assume it will stay ground even introducing the new bracket?
last dumb question for now...but what in the HE%% are those nuts and studs for anyway on the sides of the tranny? Specifically for this?

I am learning so much...but I have to ask all the questions to understand...yes, I am one of those people. But once I do something then I feel I have asked as many questions as possible and USUALLY what I am doing to my car seems to work out. I hate doing anything blind. Because of this site, I have gone from a VERY beginner status to a plain old beginner status which is a lot on these cars! I too appreciate everyone answering. I would assume if you asked Vintage - during my build - that I sent no less than 300 emails and probably 50 phone calls! I drive everyone buggy (come on, great play on words there)
Todd, hopefully you can get another nut on the stud. Lock them together and use the inner nut to back out the stud. I had to buy a couple of thinner nuts in order to get them both on. You only have to back them out enough to get the plate on and bolted. Maybe 1/4" or less. I also had to do a little grinding on the bracket to make it fit right. Your car is almost new so everything should move easily.
Leon Chupp reminded me of this simple trick. (thanks Leon)
If the tranny is relatively new (and since your car is new, the tranny should be, too) the tranny side covers should be sealed to the case with Permatex gel, so when you remove one or two side cover stud nuts nothing should happen. Al's comment about backing out the stud a bit will work. Better to replace the stud with a longer one, but backing it out is OK, too, but if you're going to that much trouble, measure how much stud sticks out beyond the side cover now, then use the the two nut method and completely remove the studs, put some locktite medium (blue) on the threads for about 1/4" from the inside end, then replace them and screw them in so they stick out another 1/4" longer than when you started. This way, they won't further loosen and will stay put once the compensator bar is installed and you'll never have to worry about them.
